I saw the email from WY Game and Fish come through and perked up thinking Christmas had come a day early. Probably won't be the last time I'm disappointed by WY in the next 24 hours.
The hunt went well. Limited out on 3 hens in about 4 hours. Walked for 4ish miles with no birds flushed, then shot the three hens out of the same bunch. Didn't hear many other shots, but did see a ton of hunters.
Does anyone have any experience with the Glendo Special Pheasant Hunt in Wyoming? I drew a permit for November 9th and I am not sure what to expect. There's not a whole lot of discussion about it on the interwebs and I'm trying to determine what the terrain will be like in each area. It seems...
I was fortunate enough to tag out on opening morning, calling a decent 6x6 in with cow calls to 10 yards. Went back out with two buddies to hunt September 14th-22nd. Bugles rang our ears bright and early on the 14th. Got within 60 yards, but no shot opportunity. Had another bull later that day...
How long until you start tracking after a shot all comes down to experience and shot placement. Obviously, the sooner you can get the hide off and air circulating around the meat, the better. In rifle season this is a lot less of an issue than in archery season when it can be much hotter during...
During archery season, find the bulls and you'll find the cows. Utilize cow calls and bugles to locate a herd, then slip in front and wait for a cow to pass. I would also spend time glassing meadows and transition areas where cows are more likely to be feeding/passing through.
I usually pack some Ziploc bags to take it back to the house with me and fry up. Was looking to see if there was a good way to do it when you're not in a place where you can fry it.
What do y'all do for cooking Grouse in the back country? I've cooked them over a fire, but fire bans prevented you from having a fire last year in CO. Looking for other ways to enjoy them. Any tasty recommendations for the Jetboil?
Trekking poles are like gaiters. Everyone seems to make fun of the person using them until you give them a try yourself. After that, you never leave home without them! I have a set of Mountainsmith's and really like them. The rubber foot wore off pretty quickly making it loud to walk across...
I won't leave home without my AGC harness and Vortex binos. Harness is just too handy not to have IMO. It easily and conveniently holds binos, rangefinder, wind detector, tag, pen, ID, glassing pad, knife, fire starter and elk calls. Beats the heck out of digging around in your pack every time...
I'm running a pair of kennetreks that I purchased through a RMEF sale and they are worth every penny. I do not have much experience with other brands, but I can say any gaiter is better than no gaiter! For me, the added warmth during cool mornings and evenings is a huge plus.
I have an EXO 3500 and would say it's the perfect size for 5 days. I utilize the smaller space to my advantage so that I'm not carrying around a ton of gear that I don't need (been there, done that). One could even get a few more days out of it, if you packed correctly.
All tags that were returned AND all tags that were not drawn (more tags than there were applicants in the regular draw) will be issued in the left-over draw. The tags that are in high demand are those that were returned and took points to draw in the regular draw. These tags sell out within...
I have the Non-insulated Guides and really enjoy them. As most have said, if you're moving around then it is a non-issue later in the season. I use mine for scouting and hiking during the summer and I did not want my feet to be soaked from the additional 200gr insulation. In my opinion, they...
I just bought a BlackGold Pro 5-pin slider with the Wing-Truss Dovetail and I'm really enjoying it. I made the switch from a Trophy-Ridge 4-pin fixed sight (5th pin broke and I never fixed it). I never plan on take a shot over 60 yards, but I like the idea of being able to practice at long...
At the end of the day, buy what you like. You have to live with it for the next XX years. There has been more animals harvested in solid colors than camo. With that said, I do believe camo can only help you out in the field; as long as the pattern somewhat matches your surroundings.
I...
I second (or tenth) the use of gaiters, a comfortable bino harness and bringing less clothes. I have over-packed clothes the last two years and have regretted it each time. This year I will be wearing:
Top - FL Wick Short Sleeve Crew, FL Kiln Hoody and packing the FL Uncompahgre for extended...
I have used a locator bugle during CO's second season with good luck. Busted a herd during the same season and cow called the herd back to me. I will never leave my bugle tube or cow calls at home during any season.
