I was having issues with my Zoleo.

I should have known, it's all firmware update related. I am not familiar with Inrerach but it's probably the same and worth checking on.

Turns out it's easy to check to see if you need an update; Go to the App Store and it will tell you if the software of your Zoleo is out of date.

With your Zoleo on and near your phone, update the app on your phone...and through bluetooth is will want to update your unit as well .

Setting wise, never set your unit to the message frequency of; "Always on". It lowers your battery life to 20 hours from 300. I set to Manual

Worth noting for those not aware; The system checks satellites every 12 minutes. With the new version there is a menu option to push messages-both send and receive.

In the initial or weather screen there is a dark gray bar just above the bottom menu options- here, circled in Red.

That up arrow opens this menu.

The green button "Check Messages" pushes messages through the satellite immediately without having to wait for the every 12 minute software cycle. You can push the button as much as you want and it will immediately update.

FWIW, I really like the Zoleo and have been using it all over the world...only having issues in the last month on a scouting trip due to my software being 2 versions behind.

If you have a Zoleo or inReach, I would check and test your unit before hunt season- glad I did to mine.

If someone with an inReach has any tips, tricks or software stuff they want to add here, I will update the title of the thread for the knowledge base to reflect both units.

Be safe out there.
I'm typically by myself for a week or two so I really like having one of these units....but this year I will be with a buddy helping him with his LE Elk tag...and another buddy on my hunt this year.

Good reminder. I’ve experienced weird behavior in the past with my inReach when running outdated firmware. I’ve since added “check inReach firmware” to my pre-hunt to-do list.

Yes you can manually check messages rather than wait for its programmed cycle. It’ll check for messages when you ask for weather data too.
Does inreach work on that 12 minute cycle?
Slightly different for the Mini and Messenger. It’ll push outgoing messages immediately then follows the info below ⬇️

inReach Mini and inReach Mini 2 Communicators

Listen Interval

  • Listens for 10 minutes after sending a message
  • Checks for new messages every hour

NOTE: The automatic, hourly mail checks cannot be disabled.

Manual Message Check

  1. Power on the inReach communicator.
  2. Press the down arrow until you reach Mail Check or Check for Messages.
  3. Press OK.

If you use the Garmin Messenger or Explore apps, make sure you are logged in to the app and test it before you are out of range of data service. If you don’t and you end up in the backcountry without service you won’t be able to log in and use the apps.

Good info BBob.

The rep explained to me the Zoleo's go to that every 12 minute default to save battery.

It looks like in reach does the same with their every hour default. Good to know.
