Here are some pictures, and maybe a bit of a story with some of them, of rams I have guided or accompanied friends on. Most of them are from the Yukon but a few are from NWT or BC.
The first successful sheep hunt I was ever on was somewhere around 1983. My friend Mark and my brother Marc and I took a boat down a river and set up camp one day. The next morning we went up the mountain. Finally late in the afternoon we found sheep. As we crept over a little knoll we had over 50 sheep bedded down on a large flat below us. Probably 15 rams and a whole bunch of ewes and lambs all within about a hundred yard circle of each other. We all choose our rams and got set up on rests, we were still yet undetected and had lots of time. At the count of 3 we all shot. Immediately they sheep were off and running away in 1 large group presenting no other shot opportunity. Needless to say our friend Mark was the only one who connected and had his first ram. By the time darkness set in we were only a little more than half way off the mountain. We spent the night in the willows keeping a tiny fire going to keep warm as it rained on us. Being young and inexperienced we didnt even have rain gear and it made for a long night.
The first ram I ever guided was back in 1994. It took us a couple days to even find rams as the area was sparsely populated. 2 nights in a row the winds were so strong our tent was continually getting flattened out on us. On the 5th day we finally found a small group of rams with 2 good ones. The other good one definitely came up over the bridge of the nose more than the one my hunter selected but didnt have the weight or depth of curl this one had. A great start to guiding with a 39 inch 168 ram. The next day we almost made it to the lake to fly out on when we came across a big 8.5 ft grizz my hunter was also able to tag. Skull went almost 24 inches
Over the next 10 years or so I guided mostly in the northern Yukon and NWT. I dont think there is a place any more beautiful than the Bonnet Plume or Arctic Red River areas. Here are some rams from those areas.
This ram was taken on the 9th day of a 10 day hunt 15 air miles from the lake we had to fly out on, its a light colored 38 inch fannin
to be continued…..
