Headed up in a little over a week for a hunt in the Yukon. Taking my son. After my hunt is done he will have the opportunity to go after a caribou (time permitting). I have seen the pics of bulls killed on the outfitters concession but I also understand that only the best of the best make the brochures or websites. I was hoping someone that has hunted in the northern outfitter concessions could give insight into overall trophy quality for mountain caribou in that part of the province so that we have appropriate expectations.

I live in the yukon and have guided here since 2011. Send me a PM and I'll answer your questions as best as I can.

enjoy the good time in our beautiful territory. august is the prime time for caribou meat if you get one you will understand what i meant.

i do not know which outfitter you are going with but early in the season the caribous can be as high as dall sheep and you will surprised by that especially when you will have to bring back the meat ... way harder to bring back than a sheep or a barrenground one. woodland caribou is a different animal in the mountain for sure.

good luck and good hunting.

A little late to be looking at overall trophy quality and expectations no? At this point, just be excited for it and enjoy the experience with your son.

Nah, the booking of this hunt wasn’t ever dependent on the quality of caribou. Just wondering what we should expect. It’s a Fannin hunt that will hopefully have time for my son to chase caribou. The knowledge potentially gained from this thread tells me what is there so we can make a solid decision on what trophy class is available. If there are a plethora of 380 class bulls then we don’t pull the trigger on the first 340 we see.

Thanks to those of you with knowledge of the area that have sent PM’s. Truly appreciate it.

A mountain caribou hunt in the Yukon is a dream of mine, ballpark what are these hunts going for ?(single species).
an easy answer for me as a resident: time, fuel, leg time and $10 for the hunting license and $10 for the tag (no harvest fee for residents).

just a reminder: mountain caribou is not a specy per say just a list in the trophy books ... there is officially two kinds in the caribou: the barrenground and the woodland. some woodland are living in the mountains but it doesnt make them in taxinomy a mountain caribou ...

Oh, I going by what I saw on GSCO. They have 5-6 different caribou listed across Canada.

So your live in the Yukon, any idea what the local guides are charging for those hunts?
yes im living in the Yukon and do not guide anymore so i do not know how much the outfitters are charging for caribou i will suggest to look on some reports here and other places and contact the OPs to get an idea how they operate and how they will deal with you and your expectations. most will offer caribou as an extra trophy in the hunt per say and you will get only caribou hunt unless they taylor it for you.
