Headed up in a little over a week for a hunt in the Yukon. Taking my son. After my hunt is done he will have the opportunity to go after a caribou (time permitting). I have seen the pics of bulls killed on the outfitters concession but I also understand that only the best of the best make the brochures or websites. I was hoping someone that has hunted in the northern outfitter concessions could give insight into overall trophy quality for mountain caribou in that part of the province so that we have appropriate expectations.

I live in the yukon and have guided here since 2011. Send me a PM and I'll answer your questions as best as I can.

enjoy the good time in our beautiful territory. august is the prime time for caribou meat if you get one you will understand what i meant.

i do not know which outfitter you are going with but early in the season the caribous can be as high as dall sheep and you will surprised by that especially when you will have to bring back the meat ... way harder to bring back than a sheep or a barrenground one. woodland caribou is a different animal in the mountain for sure.

good luck and good hunting.

A little late to be looking at overall trophy quality and expectations no? At this point, just be excited for it and enjoy the experience with your son.

Nah, the booking of this hunt wasn’t ever dependent on the quality of caribou. Just wondering what we should expect. It’s a Fannin hunt that will hopefully have time for my son to chase caribou. The knowledge potentially gained from this thread tells me what is there so we can make a solid decision on what trophy class is available. If there are a plethora of 380 class bulls then we don’t pull the trigger on the first 340 we see.

Thanks to those of you with knowledge of the area that have sent PM’s. Truly appreciate it.
