Youtube jockeys losing credibility

Still awaiting the OP’s pics of all those easy 6x’s. Here in NM I’ve made the mistake several times of passing something early never to have the opportunity again. Sucks going through the winter having to buy meat at the store thinking about what could’ve been in your freezer. OP started a deek measuring contest and as soon as the tape measure was out and 9 pages later he’s nowhere to be found.

More than zero.

You don't think killing animals you wouldn't normally kill "for the Gram," for the likes, for the views, for the money, just seems a little wrong? Even just a teensy bit?
Oh don't get me wrong, I have a very low opinion of social media in general and all the shenanigans that come of it. There are certainly those types who kill animals just so they have something to post and cover up with hashtags.

If we want to be objective about this, we would need to look at the size of the elk killed by specific "youtube jockeys" before and after their internet fame and compare the percentage of big vs small bulls during both timeframes. Otherwise, how do you know that they would not have otherwise killed that bull? After a 10 day hunt and no kill would you settle for a small bull on the last day? If it happens on film does that make it selling out?

I myself wouldn't settle. As I've mentioned before rags have always gotten a pass, and if I were purely after the meat I would shoot cows.

I think if doing something even gives a suspicion of impropriety, "celebrities" should default to the conservative. The optics just aren't worth the risk, IMO. Do it 100% right, or have the discipline to maintain standards.

The one doing the shooting.

In case it has to be clarified, I don’t expect YouTube jockeys check with me or the OP before they go hunting.

I think some expectation for what you are seeing can be explained by general/otc tags vs controlled hunts

For What it’s worth I’ve hunted elk in Washington pretty much every weekend of the legal season for the last 15 years and failed to shoot legal bull. So I appreciate learning more about how to find them even if they’re not six points.

i wonder if people used to say the same about Larry D Jones.... they didn't kill all huge bulls.... though there was a lot better age class around to chase back then. he just wanted to depict elk hunting well, what it was to them.... what is wrong with that same concept today?

i think the whole antler inches era has done a lot more bad than good for hunting, to the point when someone kills some monster on public land, the authenticity is heavily questioned.... and a fair percentage of the time, it's for good reason when we hear they broke 15 laws blatantly to acquire those antlers (including filmed hunts)

those critics, who kill big bulls every year, start filming it every year, and see if the difficulty goes up. i see all sides, i don't love all hunting constantly being exploited for people's gain (in popularity, endorsements, sales, whatever) i also don't know their true motives, maybe some of these guys really do want to just share their experiences.

what i do know, is having more guys in the woods, to make these videos happen (a couple hunters and a couple camera guys) does not make it easier to kill elk. i mainly hunt solo because i'm more effective that way.... it's a lot easier for me to get into bow range vs 3 of us getting in bow range.

killing a bull with your bow on public land every year is something that most don't accomplish, regardless of antler size. the majority of guys in the woods aren't holding out for a 5+yr old bull, yet most regions, success rates are below 10%..... we all have different motivations for being out there, we are all at a different level of skill, we all have different goals for the season.

i don't think anyone has any room to criticize unless you do kill big mature bulls on public land otc tags every year, killing them among the masses, every year.... there are very few who actually do that, and those aren't the guys complaining on the internet about someone filming a raghorn being shot on video.

Idk what you shoot. Of all the videos that I watch the one thing that gets under my skin is big money. I don’t think that the trophy is truly earned. I am not trying to knock outfitters. If I had a really really good tag then I would consider hiring a outfitter. I am talking about the governor tag type hunts. No skill required it might as well be high fence.

Lots of guys do it better they just don't film it

This doesn’t make sense. Part of the difficulty is the filming. So if they aren’t filming, they aren’t doing it better. And if we have to watch something to pass the time, what else is there for us to watch?

It makes perfect sense lots of guys kill more and bigger animals then the YouTube and Instagram heroes. They just don't put out in public so their units get ruined and overrun.

the aspiring youtube jockey stuff has gotten pretty funny "that bull wasn't quite what we're looking for so we passed that bull" is what they say right after they try to kill it but never get inside 100yds through the timber getting little glimpses as he runs off, haha. the only answer they even got from the bull was barking.... you know he's hot when he starts barking like a dog, haha.

or just jump one and the only time they see it is running full speed away from them at 50yds and further.

it's the exact same thing as those guys who never fill tags say they were holding out for a big one... passed lots of bulls, but none big enough.... then they finally get a shot at a small bull and kill it, then the story changes to "freezer was getting empty, so decided to kill a meat bull"

i think the above is much more insufferable than the guys killing some small bulls on film without a bunch of excuses about why they killed a young bull. consistently killing bull elk with a bow (or rifle for that matter) in busy otc public lands isn't easy... it may seem easy this time of the year thinking about elk hunting, but very, very, very few fill tags 80+% of the time in those environments

Enjoy watching videos just because I don't get to hunt out west, yet. When I get my first hunt, cow, spike, rag horn, as long as it is legal I am fully sending a projectile.
