Looking at getting my 8 year old son into his first hunting rifle, and also want something for me as well as i want to step down from my .300 win mag for deer. Looking for something we can both shoot and be effective with also lower recoil for him. Already looking into the Ruger American line, but what caliber do you guys think would fit the bill? Thanks!

Probably a good thread to start with

223 or 22 arc will kill everything inside 350-400 yards. Anything more than that is for some other unnecessary but valuable reason to you. Only exception is states that only allow 6mm/243.

Do you need more, have a desire for something else?

If additional distance a 6 creed or 243 out to 600.

I think it depends on what game you wanna hunt and if big or large game what your states requirements are, or the states you’ll be hunting in.
Either way, any quality rifle in .243 is hard to beat for a youngin, or an adult. And I say that bc here you can shoot less then .23 caliber for large game. I don’t know others money situations but I’d go tikka 243 or Winchester model 70 featherweight. Or if you already have a bolt gun, a lever gun could be fun for a kid and had in many calibers. 30-30 would be my go to. New marlin or Winchester

My 11 year old and I shoot a Tikka .223.

The compact models come with a stock spacer you can add and remove.

I got a deer with it this year and I can’t think of a better rifle and cartridge combo for a young shooter to start with. Full pass through on a young buck using 73 grain ELDM. Hit ribs/double lung. Ran and tumbled like 10 yard, lots of blood on the ground for that short path.

If I had a .24 cal requirement in my state I guess I’d be looking at 6 ARC or 6 creedmoor with a suppressor.
