Youth Knife Suggestion

Get him/her a knife that you would be proud to use at 50 years old. Knives are meant to be used for a long time and it is pretty cool to have your first knife.

Agree with this. He isn't going to be a youth for very long.

Ironwill has a decent little knife. MKC speedgoat. I’m sure you can find a decent kids knife in Buck, etc.
I just picked up a MKC mini stone goat to try this year and I’ve really enjoyed my steep country since they came out. Not fixed but I still have the 110 my dad gave me, I don’t use it all the time but it’s here. Smaller version is a 112, hard to go wrong with a classic knife.
Those smaller MKC knives are looking pretty good!

Tops Bull trout in the 150 range
MKC- Mini speed goat
Mini Stoned Goat
Jackstone

I like the bull trout I have but I love my jackstone and mini speed goat

For a knife that punches way above its price and size, my kids all loved this one. Great grip (narrow, finger groove, grippy texture), size and safe sheath.

Later this would be more heirloom, if you stay with Buck. Maybe upon their first kill.

At bang for your buck, you're going to be hard pressed to beat ESEE knives. The Izula-DT looks like it might fit your requirements.

I am probably going to go with the LT Wright Frontier Valley. It is relatively Inexpensive, good enough to use as an adult, and doesn’t have a ton of laser text on the blade. The only downside is thst it is not available in AEBL. So corrosion may be a problem.

Mora Basic in stainless, stainless because it's their first knife, you don't necessarily want to tack on carbon steel care to it all, nail down the basics in safe handling and use first, helle also makes knives specific for youngsters with rounded tips.
