I am looking for a fixed blade knife with a sub 3” blade for a youth hunting knife. Preferably with the handle on the small side.

I would like the steel to be decent but not a super steel.

What do you reccomend?

Get him/her a knife that you would be proud to use at 50 years old. Knives are meant to be used for a long time and it is pretty cool to have your first knife.

This will be a gift for his first deer, so this is definitely something being considered. Something that is nice, on the small side, and could be used when he is an adult.

ESEE Xancudo, Izula-II, or ESEE 3. If you want to drop bigger money, MKC x Meateater flattail.
Thanks for the suggestions! The Izula-II is what I had in mind when starting this.

I bought my 8 yr old son a westen look alike at kmart assuming he would lose it. At 41 he still has it and has used it to dress every deer, elk, nilgai, hog, ibex, oryx and big horn he has killed in his life. Don’t assume it will be lost.

This would be my choice. Big fat handle for motor skills that are still developing, and a wide scandi grind to learn honing easily.

I would recommend something with a little more stainless so if they forget to clean it you don’t have to worry about rusting so bad. LT wright makes some nice affordable handmade knives.
