In my opinion, a shoulder mount conveys the size and beauty of an animal much more so than a European or a plaque mount. But, your space, the cost and your personal taste certainly are part of that decision. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks - it only matters what you think (or your spouse/family).

I mount my own deer, which does make the cost not as much of a concern. However, I have mounted quite a few so our house is full (15ish Whitetails, plus others). With so many, a few years ago my wife and I decided any more Whitetail mounts would have to be a truly mature deer, scoring over 160. Within a year or two of that decision I took a mature, non-typical buck that scores in the mid 150's. He was a beautiful gray muzzled old deer, but I didn't mount him. I did put him on a plaque and hung it up beside other bucks in the same size class. To me, the plaque just doesn't capture what that deer was and I do regret not having done him. Since then I have mounted another buck (smaller than him) and plan to mount the deer (a mid 150's heavy forest deer) I took this past fall. For myself, a shoulder mount keeps alive the memory of that deer and the experience I had.

I have two shoulder mounts. They're in south Texas. I'm in sw Oklahoma.
Last buck I killed I felt worth mounting, I did a Euro mount on.

I would have done a shoulder mount, but that's gotten terribly expensive.
I bought a "Buck Bucket" at Wal-Mart. It's a helluva a lot cheaper than a shoulder mount. The Euro mount is MUCH easier to take care of....and I think looks better!

Do you have a fav kit for mounting deer? I just bought some land and will likely shoot a couple big bucks over next couple years and want a good shoulder mt for fireplace mantle. Havent built house yet so will hopefully have a couple to master my craft on…

These guys sre huge at 120-130, a 140 would be a wowzer.

I’ve got 5 whitetail shoulder mounts, and I wish they were all euros. Two of the smallest ones aren’t even in my trophy room, they’re in my garage. I much prefer the aesthetic of the euros in my trophy room to shoulder mounts. I can’t ever see myself doing a shoulder mount on anything again.

No kit.
I learned how to through books and videos years ago. I just get the needed supplies when I run out and have more to do.
