Man, surfing gunbroker has been depressing of late. Im not sure if those once reasonably priced older guns have either hit that “classic” stage or are just way overpriced.
Anyway, hopeful bump someone out there wants to see their gun be used in the woods and not just collect dust
Good luck with your search. I have 2 but will not part with either. Rem 788 243 which was a Christmas present and first deer rifle 45 years ago. The other is a Marlin lever action that was my moms.
I have a Browning A-Bolt micro medallion in 243. It’s a shooter. I don’t shoot it much at all. But it’s taken 4 first time bucks for youth hunters over the last 20 years. In great shape.
PM me if interested.
Maybe look at getting a wood-stocked Tikka T3X in 243...? That would be a great gun for your son and then he can swap the barrel out later when he wants to go to something bigger and still have the same rifle that his dad bought him.

Upvote for this. I would’ve appreciated that kind of foresight from my dad as a kid. (Don’t get me wrong, my pops is a great dad… just not big on sentimental things)
Buy a Ruger American Compact, when he grows lots of takeoff adult stocks on ebay. Sometimes hard to sort out on GB, Search of Ruger American 243 with 18” barrel. Around $500
