Got off of a night shift, had my father-in-law (rifle hunter) hosting me in archery season. September 1st, 9:30 am, already 70 degrees, and he's driving me around to get a feel for the area. Finally I get out of the truck at a big stand of dark timber. I look at him and say "I'll meet you a quarter mile down the road in 15 minutes".

As I still hunt and look for sign, I cow call periodically. Crashing branches get me ready. More crashing changes my focus. The second bull offers a window at 15 yards. As the arrow drops him, after a 20 yard dash, not 10 minutes into my first every elk bowhunt, I say "well elk are easy..."

It was a 343" old bull shot with my 30.30 at 50 yards. on opening morning many years ago. My biggest bull to date too.

Second year archery hunting in an OTC unit in Colorado. We did not know much and we were coming down a ridge and looked into the deep timber and saw 3 bulls bedded. Arrowed him at 50 yards. He was not big at all, 2x3 but it was the most amazing feeling in the world. You would have thought I shot a 400 class bull the way I reacted. From that point on I was hooked.

This was my first archery elk. Was a great day. Killed him at noon on opening morning. He was bugling up a storm. My dad behind me trying to use the Hoochie Mama, but sounding more like a loud mouse. Got lucky.View attachment 15858

Didnt know anything about anything. Hiked straight up into some real elky stuff. Camelclutch and I were bitching about no elk and eating big texas cinnamon rolls. We were blowing on all our cow calls with no expectation of calling in an elk. Well one showed up and had us pinned down at 32 yards. I got it ranged my when it busted off. I cow called immediately it came back in and I put the front quatering shot on it. Jeff never even had a chance to get up from laying down. After we found it I quartered it then we packed it out on our shoulders. No game bags, no pack frames, no decent anything. 9 hours later we had it all back to the truck. What an experience.

Never with a bow. I started 3 years ago and have been as close as I could get without filling a tag including missing a spike my first year. Got a feeling this is my year!
