You might rethink booking with Mark Romo out of Dillingham

I've worked for a few operations in the Wood-Tikchik area and know Mark, he used to help with transporting our fishing guests to and from town. As far as I know he is back operating in the park.

Edit: Looks like he may not be outfitting hunters. The Big Game Commercial Services Board does not list him as an active guide/transporter.

If someone were looking for an unguided moose hunt I would've recommended Rick Grant. Great guy, sad to see him retire from flying and outfitting. He flew anglers and hunters all over Western Alaska, even let us 3rd lake boys crash in his hangar when we had to make the 6hr boat trips to town.

There were about 80 unguided moose camps on the upper lakes this year...and every year the number just keeps going up. Hard to go char fishing when there's a camp at every creek mouth. I wish Alaska DNR would put a cap on the amount of non-resident hunters. It's not a super high density moose area to begin with. Oh, and ADF&G has been aerial gunning bears in the area in June for the last 3 or 4 seasons, might be worth looking for somewhere else to hunt.

Man this is seeming to be the story everywhere. Numbers are climbing and climbing. I know one Expiditor who took in 150 moose from st Mary’s in one week last year . The moose in western Alaska are getting smashed. How does everyone know where’s moose out there….Well that would be social media. Internet. YouTube. Nothing is sacred anymore.

I was hunting up the nushagak one year and there were some people who had drive. Their commercial fishing boat up to live in while they hunted. They had 7 bulls hanging on their boat, I guess they were “proxy hunting” but they had shot 7 already and were looking for more.

I love fishing the nushagak but hunting it is for the birds.

How far up? Once you get past Koliganek it can be pretty bony in spots, especially on a dry year. Been through many impellers and liners on the upper Nush.

Hell I took a pair of 1852s about 16 hours upriver from Dillingham this year. Once we passed New Stu we had to be really careful with our props. We stopped for the night just up from Koliganek and had a couple of Yamaha jets flown out to ditch the prop motors for the rest of the summer. Ran those skiffs all season and would not want to have a big inboard jet anywhere North of the Nuyakuk

How far up were the guys hunting? Angel bay so not too far at all.

This is why I don’t post anything outdoorsy on social media anymore. Also, I think part of the problem pushing more hunters up towards the Lakes area is that “non-shareholders” can’t hunt much of the lower Nush anymore.

Only shareholders can hunt the nush for the first part of the season now, I’d bet in the next few years only shareholders can hunt there at all.

I'll be headed out this fall in that general area, with said pilot. If any of you are willing to chat a bit and answer a few questions or give advice I'd really appreciate it. Send me a PM. Thanks
