Yellowstone Cow tag so my lady can apply for a antelope tag

That title must be confusing ? Well I guess it sort of is.
(my main goal is to find a good backpack COW hunt close to her antelope hunt)

Last year our family hunted SD for pheasants, Wy for doe deer, and I hunted Co for elk - It was a awesome month.

This year we want to take 2 weeks and hunt Wy and while I want to chase elk in the mountains, she would prefer to chase any
set of horns on top of a pronghorn (she has only harvested 1 doe and plenty of birds) She would love to hang a horned skull on the wall. I'm looking for National Forest for a few solo overnight pack trips on foot.

Coming from the West the east side of Yellowstone looks to be favorable for a cow tag and for antelope the area between Yellowstone and the Bighorns seems to be the closest area with lots of BLM land that she might draw a antelope buck tag.

We both have 1PT for elk, deer, and antelope.

We were going to hunt elk in the southern portion of the state but that puts going for an antelope tag way out of the area. Everything along the hwy 80 corridor seems to be at least a 4 or 5pt draw !

Any thoughts and PM's would be greatly appreciated,

Tobias

Copy that. Agreed. We always try to define a "cow zone". A distance beyond which we will only shoot bulls. ....for me, a legal elk will almost always get a backpack ride!!

I think the biggest problem you face with the Bighorn Basin area for elk is that most of the herds won't be down out of the wilderness when the antelope season is open. And as a nonresident, you won't be able to hunt the wilderness areas for elk without a guide. Not sure you'd want to drive that far, but the northeast part of Wyo. would be an option. You could hunt elk in the Black Hills and antelope around Newcastle on the Thunder Basin Grassland.

I would not be in the least bit disappointed to pack out a cow for my family - I'd really like my misses to come home with a trophy this year

Wyosteve - when do the herds descend from the wilderness typically ? I know this is based on weather but are we talking mid Nov ?
