Built a rifle based on element 4.0 chassis with folding adapter and carbon smoke buttstock.

Initially had the folder the wrong direction as I'm lefty. Move it to fold the other way but the set screw is now on top and there is no notched part on the buffer tube for the set screw to go in.

I messaged xlr but figured I'd ask here because well, I'm impatient and I leave on Monday for moose.

Forego the set screw?
Have it fold the wrong direction against the bolt handle?

I run one in a left handed configuration where it swings to opposite side of the bolt. If I remember right, I just tightened the set screw down. In fact I may have trimmed it so it didn’t protrude as much? I can’t remember. Either way, it’s been fine for the last couple years. I definitely wouldn’t have it beating against the bolt handle

I have it mounted correctly for now. Might pull the tube off and grind a notch for the set screw to go in for extra insurance.

I think at one time they had set screws on both top and bottom Im hoping @XLR will chime in.

The more I think about it, I do think I swap to a little bit shorter stainless set screw. Just because I didn’t like feeling it stick up. I snug it up, didn’t crank down hard as I could but definitely snug. I also put an indicator mark on my castle nut and tube as you can see in the picture. I want to see if anything ever moved or broke free. Have never had an issue.

But yes I did just snug it up right onto the threads.

The set screw is a secondary security to help the buttstock from coming loose. If the castle nut is torqued down to 25-35 foot pounds, it is not coming loose. We use a pre-set 32-foot-pound torque wrench and have never had an issue with the buttstock coming loose. Quite the opposite, some feel we have a gorilla tightening them here at the shop! HA
So for a left-hand buttstock, we just tell customers to no longer use the set screw. Now, if they want to use one, we recommend a pointed set screw that goes more into the threads, where the cupped set screw that is used for the machined slot could damage the threads, causing issues down the road.

With all that being said, XLR has always tried to accommodate left hand shooters as much as possible! And have done so since 2010. This example is where one could say we fell short... And maybe so, but under the decision, it came down to whether we alter certain products even more that can lead to cost changes and aesthetic changes for a small percent of sales. We 100% care about those left-hand sales! But with the set screw not being necessary, decided not to provide additional grooves and or threaded provisions or additional products specifically for LH folding.
Hope that all makes sense, and please don't hesitate to reach out regarding any of this, but if I were you I would not use the set screw and just properly torque the castle nut down.
