Hey all, I spend tons of time here on Rokslide but don't post much, outstanding site! I have a question and hope this is right place to post it up. If not, Mods, feel free to remove it.

We enjoy finding western towns that are off the beaten path and not heavy with tourist activity that we can explore, hike, fish, and go on our own wildlife viewing car rides daily. The past 2 years we have stayed in the Gunnison and Crested Butte area of Colorado and loved it. I would like to stay within 13 hours or so of central Iowa.

I was thinking of Wyoming and avoiding the Yellowstone area. I have been researching Casper and I love the historical aspect but at nearly 60,000 in population it might be a little large for my liking (maybe not). Anyone have any opinions of Casper or the surrounding area for a vacation destination? Or I would welcome any other recommendations.

Thanks in advance!

Just keep going right by Casper, up to Sheridan. Much smaller town, beautiful mountain range with great fishing, lots of wildlife and scenic drives. Plenty of places to get lost!

Yep, Saratoga is a nice area, I hunted around there for many years, plus the Snowy range is near by. If you're into hiking and camping, years ago we took the kids into the wind river range for awhile, great country. Another neat town is Lander. Wyoming is a great state with open spaces and for the most part, few people.

Haha, sorry no offense! Casper is a nice place, some of the best fishing in the state on the Platte river........also a great place to fly a kite.

If you get to Buffalo, cross the Bighorns and stop in Ten Sleep. Also have the hot springs in Thermopolis in a beautiful state park.

I really like Kaycee. Nice little RV park, fuel and small town food. 200 people or so, Red Wall/Hole in the Wall just to the West. Easy to drive to Casper, Buffalo and Sheridan. I'd go back to Kaycee in a heartbeat.

Casper has gorgeous summers but I will admit you can zip right through in the winter. It blows like crazy. I second kaycee/buffalo area as it is gorgeous up there. We drop our camper and leave it there most of the summer.

WyoBowhunter21, thanks for the invite. Not sure if I could make it work during the family vacation but who knows. I looked at the Rally Point forum but couldn't find that a date or location has been set. Any details you canpass along?

Or kirwin is cool there is the town itself but various old shafts in the valley, then if you hike back about 4 ish miles there is the remains of Amelia earharts cabin that was being built wile she flew around the world. When word got back she went missing work stopped and what's left is there. There's many other valleys to hike around in. If you go back from kirwin to bear creek pass it's like 11400ft you can see the wind river range

Uh basically just go drive around the big horn basin, go to thermop and drive the wind river canyon and get some Thai food and see the hot springs.

Go to Cody drink beer at the silver dollar, GO TO THE BUFFALO BILL MUSEUM lol it's awesome so much cool stuff, and guns......

Go from Cody North and drive the chief Joseph scienic byway then go up beartooth pass.

Tetons are worth seeing IMO this is were I camped there are tons of spots with lookouts like this.

Just wanted to say a huge thank you for all of the vacation recommendations. We decide on Sheridan and absolutely loved it! We saw thousands of antelope, hundreds of whitetails, muleys, and elk. Also saw our first ever vacation black bear just north into Montana. We toured the Battle of the Little Bighorn battlefield, checked out the towns of Buffalo, Bighorn, Ten Sleep, and searched for every building with old west history that we could. We hiked several trails and explored a cave. We rented a house in Sheridan and watched the best fireworks that we have ever seen on July 4th in Bighorn.

This is definately an area that we want to return to soon. I wish I could say that I was happy to be back in the heat and humidity of Iowa.

Thanks again!👍
