does anyone have any experience in either of these units? both look like good possibilities. the amount of timber/good looking ground looks limited in both units with only 1/4 of it not being desert/sage. but there are only 75 tags in 40 and 125 in 41. Im a little concerned about the wilderness in unit 41 holding most of the elk and being unable to hunt it being a nonresident. just curious if anyone has bowhunted either and would recommend them or say stay the heck away.

Also I don't think that type 1 tag (gun) holders can hunt the archery season after 9/15 in 40 like they can in 41. I ran into a lot of hunters last year in 41, another issue is there is really only 1 road thru 41 so everyone is fighting over fewer access points. I hunted with my buddy from Cody so I could go into the wilderness in 41, which is where most of the elk are unless there is a big snowstorm like we ran into (+18" of snow on the pass), but that only lasted a few days and they went back up high when it melted. I assume you don't have points for 38 or 39 which are better units for archery non-res.

Yes 40 Dosent allow type 1 to archery hunt. The amount of roads and permits in 38 turns me off. I have 6 points. Any better suggestions

Another issue with 41 is they also have tons of type 1 cow tags that guys can bowhunt with after 9/15. I think you can get 45 with 6 pts, if not I'd wait it out a few years as its worth it. 45 has the same type 1 hunt after 9/15 but I never saw a hunter after 9/15 but ran into a few hikers on the trails. It's a huge unit with lots of roadless non-wilderness areas. If you are set on the bighorns next year 35 might be had with 6 pts (just across the divide). 39 looks interesting too. I scouted 38 one year and it seems everyone was on the far west end so there are areas to go away from the crowds. Still I found elk about 300 yards off one of the main roads on that side.

38 and 40 are both great archery units. If your willing to get a little ways off the beaten path it's not too tough to get into elk. A lot of guys hunting in those units seemed to not get too far from the roads. There are some really nice bulls in those units as well.
