I'm considering drawing this tag in 2018. I
was wondering if anyone has hunted this season in the last few years that would be willing to share a opinion on the hunt (dont need your honey holes).

Id be interested in the time frame of your hunt, hunter pressure, and how vocal/callable the bulls were.
PMs would be great.....I can even give you a call if your willing to share.

Thanks in advance.

It’s a good unit on the type 9 tag, pressure is down compared to the firearm season and the general season with Archery stamp. I would look at the second week. The issue with the tag is probably going to take you 7 points in the special draw or 8 or 9 in the regular draw. That kind of points gets you in to several other units that one could argue maybe better on higher side of bull quality.

Trial thanks for the input. I have the points to draw it if the trends hold. I wanted to hunt a unit without griz and wolfs. This narrowed my search to 38 and 45 type 9 (archery is my preference) I also considered unit 11 type 9 but it's not what I want with my number of points.

I'm looking for a good rut hunt with vocal/callable bulls more than monster 370" bulls.

Does it seem like I'm on the right path ?

I think your on the right path then, as it would seem to fit your preferences. For that matter so will 45, not much difference between 38 and 45 aside from the section on wilderness in 45....either will give you plenty of access and decent amount of bulls. Good luck! If we both draw we will be neighbors as I going burn a few points on a near by unit also.

Well?? Either of you draw? How was it? Looking at burning points on 38 for '19.

I drew 37 type 9. I actually camped in 38. I hunted about 10 days, I would say I had fair hunt. The unit had decent quality of bulls in it however there was a lot of pressure. More then I anticipated ahead of the general season. I would say from travels in 38 there was good bit of pressure there as well.

I had 320ish bull at 30 yards my first morning that couldnt sneak an arrow in and the next morning let a 5x5 walk. It was all down hill from there. Those were the best two bulls I had opportunities at. I never drew my bow back the rest of trip. There are lot of people in these units, every where you go there are campers, trailers, atvs. I am not talking just at trail heads. 37 wasn't a unit for me and quite frankly I miss read how much pressure it got on the type 9 tags a head of the general season. I think 38 is slightly better hunt however I still think its a lot of points to burn for what your getting. From what I seen you can expect most of the herd bulls to be in 300 to 330 range in the units.
In retrospect I am sorry I burned my points on this tag.

I think flip a coin between 38 and 45. Be aware there are alot of people in the Bighorns this time of year, not just hunters, hikers, campers you name it
