If you are a terminally ill archery elk hunter with no family or friends to pass along your hard earned knowledge, coordinates and secrets to those honey holes and want to pass them along to a hunter trying to figure things out in MT, I would like to apply to be in your will as the beneficiary of your tribal knowledge. I am willing to do the eulogy at your funeral as an appreciation to your kindness and promise to give you recognition as my family says our prayers before each Elk dinner.

For everyone else still reading along. I don’t expect much but ultimately just looking for some general info for a few ranges I have been scouting. Simple info that you can PM me if you don’t want it out there for all the interweb to see. I have been hunting central MT and would like to try a new range.

Ranges of interest:

- Snowcrest/Gravely
- Tobacco
- Anaconda range (South 270 or North 321)
- any other areas you might want to point me to for further research, I am not tied to these ranges, just digging into some options

I am a general tag hike in hunter, will be with one other person, 9 days to hunt. No ATV or e-bike. I dig holes deep enough that my TP will never be seen by another person after used, I have a 4wd truck and understand its limitations but don’t mind using it.

Looking for the following info:

1. How crowded are the areas for mid Sep archery and how hard will it be to get away from the crowds
2. How bad is the ATV/Ebike scene- (I am on foot only)
3. How worried would I be to leave my truck and camp unattended while packed in (I dont have nice stuff but I also don’t want loose any of it)
4. Any tips you are willing to share

Thank you ahead of time for any responses!

I appreciate a witty lead-in! Sent you a DM...wherever you go, best of luck.

@Jagger0502 - said differently: “I am looking for your honey hole” - ???

1. Very
2. Depends on where you go. In some spots they are all over the place, others not bad.
3. Truck will be fine
4. Labor Day weekend is typically a zoo. Might not be as bad this year with how the dates align. Grizzly bears occupy parts of those ranges. Bring extra underwear.

I appreciate the info! Thank you. I am aware of the Bear situation and have spent time in bear country. I will come prepared with extra underwear as well as some other “Don’t be dumb, be Bear aware” items.

I have been around long enough to know honey holes and any relative info leading to a honey hole is not going to be handed out. The info you provided is what I am looking for. Thank you again for helping me out.

Tips for montana in September - elk are everywhere in sw Montana and typically visible from the road/trail head. Finding them is the easy part. It will be crowded and you can’t out walk everyone. Tricky part is finding low pressure area that’s not full of either wolves or grizz.

Funny angle....

I think you are shortchanging yourself by trying to be clever....it's the journey bro....get out there and burn some boot leather.

Wish I could… I am not from the area, self employed, over worked and under paid with a 1 year old and a 3 year old at home. My boss is a piece of work that wont give me any additional time off this year to scout, he has graciously said I can take 11 days off to do this hunt but I will need to work more in the meantime to afford the trip so I am locked down.

I don’t mind burning the leather, looking forward to it. Just trying to narrow down where the leather will be burned.
