Hey Everyone,

I will be heading up from CO to WY tomorrow to chase bucks in Region A for the next 5 days. This region includes hunt areas 1-6 and it allows for the taking of a whitetail or a muley buck. My buddy and I have done lots of internet scouting and he is actually out near Osage right now scouting on foot, but we are still having some trouble finding a spot to start from that looks promising. There is a good amount of public land on the SD/WY border in area 6 that looked nice to me, but access looks pretty tough.

We would prefer to hunt muley's over whitetails, but I will likely take the first buck I see as I have been unable to fill the freezer this year and have eaten 3 tags already. If anyone has been to or hunted Region A and has any advice on possible spots to check out, it would be awesome! We are willing to go anywhere in the region, just looking to have fun and have a good hunt. Will be heading out tomorrow around noon. PMs are welcome!

Thanks!!

Kyle

If you go east on I-90 to the Beulah exit and then turn right(south) you will go through an area called 'Ranch A'. This is a public road. Once you are through Ranch A, the road (gravel) will enter Nat'l. Forest land, which continues for about 10 miles. Generally either side of the road is public. Mule deer tend to prefer the (right/west) side off the road while whitetails will be more on the (left/east) side. When you get to the end of the the road, you can turn right onto the Moskee road and get back to I-90 or turn left and keep going through the Forest for a while. Good Luck. My old stomping grounds for many year and many bucks.

wyosteve- Thank you! My buddy was sitting at a gas station in Sundance and is now on his way to Buelah as we speak. Are there lots of road hunters in that area in your experience? Do you think we would be best off just parking somewhere and trying to hike around? It's hard to tell if there would be good glassing spots from looking at maps and GE. Thanks again!

What I found in Region A during the 2nd week of November was a ton of pressure in the black hills. Hunt off the national forest on small chunks of state and blm, glass when possible but hike in and get away from roads. Lots of deer around, lots of small bucks. Not much for mature animals in this unit. We did see one really cool oddball older buck chasing a doe after dark on the way back to the hotel, probably a 26 wide 18 tall 2x5 or something. Really cool rack. Shot a decent 2x3 on some BLM, had a nice 150 5 point in the binocs that was 150 yards across the fence on the wrong side. The group never crossed.

Yes, there's quite a few road hunters, but not many hike in. There are a number of 2-track Forest Service roads off of the main road. In the past we could drive many of them, but last time I was up there, a lot were closed to vehicles which is good. Hiking/hunting those 2 tracks and 'still hunting/stalking' along the ridge tops was our most successful method. Occasionally, we would do 'quiet deer drives' if we had enough folks to cover the area.
