Can someone comment on how the preference points in Wyoming work as far different species? I can't find it on their website. If I buy a point for elk and a point for deer could I someday use both of those points say for elk or do the points just stay elk for elk and deer for deer?

An elk point is for elk, and a deer point is for deer.....

I need to decide on using my 3 points on the general or saving up for a limited entry license. My #1 tag is the unit 38 type 9.. anyone else thinking similar? Waiting 8 plus years however sounds kinda gay

With point creep, I would say you are definitely looking at the plus side of 8 years, in unit 38 for type 9, with currently having 3 points.

I am in the same boat with 3 points. I think I'm going to shoot for the general tag. I've hunted cow elk in some of the general units and there lots of good elk to be had. And you can still archery hunt in sept

Was just in 38, amazing that a unit like that is taking 8plus points to draw. Totally insane.

We cashed out and did General this year. Now permanently on the General tag train. Wyoming has priced themselves out of the market. Not in tag cost, but tag time. 8+ years for a mediocre tag is just too much invested. I’d rather hunt raghorns every few years than spend $2k and 8+ years on a single pretty good trophy hunt.

Is there many good bulls pulled out of the Wyo gen areas? Bought my first point and am planning on getting in on the general tags every couple years.

Hookup, what is your definition of "good bulls"? I like to hunt elk and have no problem hunting general, public land. I have taken 4 bulls and 2 cows in my 7 attempts. (I missed a cow several times on the hunt I didn't take one) Judging distance for me in the mountains without range finder is comical.

The meat is my favorite of all ungulates including domestic. One gains a lot of knowledge they can apply to the next hunt. I might not be here in 5 years to use all those points so carpe diem is my motto when it comes to elk hunting.

The bulls I have taken have been great in my book. I feel blessed to have been able to take them. The first was a raghorn 4x5 but that was after blowing an opportunity at a monster bull. When he stood out of his bed his end of his main beams were over his hind quarters. I just didn't act fast enough before he disappeared into the christmas tree pines. I got a great 6x6(to me) scored right at 300. I scored him just to know what a 300 bull looked like and I got one. The next bull was a nice 5x5, and this year got a great 6x5 that broke off part of g4 on one side and g5 on other. He didn't grow a brow on one side either. He probably was the most rewarding bull I have taken as he was after a week of elk drought and taken with only 13 min left of legal on the last day I could hunt. The cows were great to hunt, learned a lot and I would have shot a cow had one come into sight/range on this last hunt, no problem.

Get elk hunting asap and then worry about point totals to somewhere you really want to go. Elk hunting is incredible. I hope my body holds out for many more years so I can enjoy the chase.

There are plenty of good general units in Wy. Go to Gohunt.com and do some research. A lot of general units in the western part of WY, are in Grizz country. A lot will have wilderness that non res can't hunt without a guide or a resident. There are general units with every kind of terrain out there. You just have to rigure out what you are comfortable with. Like most units anywhere, do your homework, look at maps, google earth and hunt hard away from roads and you can find elk. If grizz dont bother you than you have plenty of general units to choose from.

Wyoming or any state for that matter doesn’t have anything to do with how many points it takes to draw a tag, it’s us hunters. The state just says how many tags there are going to be, but the years it takes depends on how many people are applying to those tags. So blame your fellow sportsman! And the internet, it’s always the internets fault.

So are you saying the time involved isn't worth the wait ? I have been hearing good thing about the bighorns. Or just the sad truth of how so many units are getting this way? Curious because I really want to try a archery trip up there. My grandparents used to work for a rancher up there out of Sheridan and there stories of the mountains have me wanting to spend some time there.

You're not the first one I have heard say this, but I guess it doesn't really make sense to me. It costs $$ to build points in every state, some a lot more than Wyoming. And its not like the state said that such&such unit will require 9 points to draw. That's just where the draw odds have led us over the years. Are some overrated? Most definitely. Are others underrated?? Without a doubt. They could let more tags out in the "mediocre" units making them easier to draw, but what good does that do long term?? I don't want it to sound like I want to wait 8+ years to get a tag, it's just the way it is if that's where/what you want to hunt....

How much does it cost to build points in Alaska? What about Idaho? Are points worth anything in Washington? How many groups of guys build points trying to have a cool group hunt in Nevada?

I don’t think the states have no blame in the points mess.

Is the demand much more than the supply. Yes and only getting worse. If you look at the points pool and the number of tags available in the better units it’s easy to see many of those units are once in a lifetime.

A thought; Washington used to have all the elk tags under one catagory. By doing so folks who were happy with cow tags never got many points. They used them on cow tags. The cow tag guys didn’t have to compete with the bull tag guys, and likewise the bull tag point collectors didn’t have to compete with the cow tag guys.
But then Washington decided there was more money to be made with lots of catagorys. Now everyone competes with everyone else for cow tags, bull tags, and Quality elk tags. Now the draw odds are stupid dismal.

Those kinds of choices are State, not the number of hunters. Those kinds of choices directly effect draw odds and they are things that can be controlled much easier than game and hunter populations.

I think Alaska has a decent system as does Idaho. I think there are definitely improvements that could be made accoss the board.

But again, yes supply and demand are the big issues.

Without a doubt I would be all for no points for anyone!!! But I cant see that happening anytime soon, in fact its only a matter of time before Idaho and New Mexico (not familiar with Alaska) get in the points game. Like you said its all about the $$$$$$ these days!!
