My hunting partner and I will be hunting in Wyoming this year for the first time, and we are hunting primarily for mule deer in Unit A. We have been researching options for areas, but are running into a lot of challenges due to access. We are both DIY hunters in Washington that have always wanted to do a mule deer rut hunt, and relatively high draw rates is what led us to branching out and applying in Wyoming. In addition to deer tags, we also have doe antelope tags for Units 2 and 3

My hunting partner and I are both very active and are not scared of putting on some miles to get away from people and into areas of less pressure. We plan to bring a wall tent for a base camp, and branch out from there. Any suggestions on where to find info on areas to hunt, or info on public access areas to try out would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Tyler

Make sure you know what dates each unit closes. For Mule Deer the majority of A is closes on Nov 20th. There are not very many big areas to get off the road but most guys in that area hunt from the truck by most I mean 99%
. I've hunted the area a few times and will be there this year. You will see a ton of Whitetails and a few Mulies sprinkled in.

No problem. I'd give a bit more on the specifics but I'll be out there around the same time trying to get a buddy his first Mule Deer. Since you will be hunting when all units are open access shouldn't be too much of an issue there is a ton of public that is accessible contrary to what a lot of guys say. However, if you see a 4x4 in the 130-140 range seriously consider shooting it. You could always contact the CO or local biologist for information. Wyoming has them listed the G&F website.

There are a number of local landowners willing to allow hunters on (though sometimes with access fees), if you contact the Buffalo G&F office ((307) 684-2801)) they can give you a list of landowner contact numbers. Areas 3, 5 (Thunder Basin) and 6 generally produce the best harvest % for Mule deer.

i hunted it a few years ago on the same dates. Very much in rut. The NF is your best option for boot leather type hunting. We each shot decent 2 year old bucks. Seen a couple bigger but always in the private fields
