from the fiscal note:

"This bill provides for the Game and Fish Commission (Commission) to establish, by rule, resident and nonresident application fees not to exceed $20.00 and $75.00, respectively. This bill also allows for a single application fee for multiple hunting licenses purchased at the same time rather than a single application fee for each hunting license. The current application fees for residents and nonresidents are $5.00 and $15.00 per license, respectively."

Wyoming is really stepping it up these last few years. They are determined to find out where the NR upper spending limit truly is.

I’d take my money back right now for all these years. Sure as hell wouldn’t let a family member or friend start today with this foolishness of NR traveller hunting.

So now the money grab is aimed at the single species hunter who didn't even draw a tag.

What's next? A fee for not applying for anything in Wyoming?

Did Rob Shaul get elected to the Wyoming legislature?
What’s likely next is increased prices for 50% less tags. Then maybe needing an outfitter sponsor to buy your tags for you and hold your hand when crossing any FS road while hunting? Roads can be dangerous! Who knows 😂

Reactions: OMB
The language suggest it will be different pricing depending on species, a $20 fee for a $16 resident turkey tag is a bit ridiculous

That's how AZGF does it , app fee for everyone on the application. Plus what really sucks is a NR has to buy a license just to apply.

WY just working to increase their $12M cash cow.

“In 2020, the WGFD generated $12.2 million from preference point sales, which was 22% of its total income.”

Would be interesting to see what that number was in 2024.

Would be even more interesting to see the figures from the last ten+ years.

@wapitibob - any chance you’d have that information?

I don't.

Over $20,000,000 last year just points for elk/lope/deer, nothing else.

I think it's all getting out of control as far as the monetization of our natural resources in regard to hunting goes. It used to be hunting was something almost all could enjoy for a low cost of entry. Then some folks figured out how to make money with it and it grew into the greed and politics fuel monster we have now. Throw in the internet and "mines bigger" competive mentality we continue to fostered in our society and the flames just get fanned.
To much money being made in it. Costs will keep going up everywhere as long as the market will bare it. As much as I hate seeing it in hunting, it's even worse when you look at the things that actually matter.
Housing, Property taxes, Insurance and groceries are utterly draining the middle class of any chance to build wealth or security...much less go on that hunting trip they've wanted to take their whole life.
In the grand scheme this increase is negligible...but how many negligible increases across the board can we all take before people are like "ok...thats enough"???
Guess we'll find out eventually.

I figure that Wyoming has to make these kind of changes. The legislature has let it be know the the Game and Fish agencies will have to be self-dependent.
The point system is closer to its end. About everyone I know is making a plan to draw their last tag and exit the point system for good. If you look at the draw results. You will see lots of high point holders using their points on lesser hunts. That is an indication of people exiting the point system.
The decline of deer and antelope means less non-resident tag sales. Resident hunters will start to feel the pain in the near future. The money has to come from somewhere. Every time there are major price increases the state will lose Non-resident income. The best thing they could do is double the cost of points every other year. It would result in a quick death and speed up the process that is coming.

Resident hunting is still affordable.
If you can’t afford NR hunting so be it.

Everyone crying wolf on Nr hunting privilege.

@StuckInTheEast
I'm guessing that's Payment in Lieu of Taxes PILT the Federal Govnt pays in exchange for untaxable public land (NF/BLM) in Wy.
https://pilt.doi.gov/counties.cfm?term=county&state_code=WY&fiscal_yr=2024&Search.x=49&Search.y=11

$37M in 2024 on 30M acres in Wy.

WY isn't the only state that receives PILT: Ct got $41k.
Yeah, I'll have to dig into that a bit...ir not...there's an awful lot of taxable oil and gas revenue coming off alot of that non taxable public land i would think... Im sure that's quite the rabbit hole to go down that would lead nowhere redeeming 🤣

The "some folks" you reference above is the state government. Take Wyoming, for instance:
$12M in 2020,
$20M in 2024.

Just on preference point fees. Easy way to make a lot of money.

Very easy way to make a lot of money since you aren't actually selling anything of value.
The point holder dies or just forgets to buy more points, BOOM points gone.
Crypto makes more sense than preference points.
