What ever he is after he could find in the west general region. Weather that's a big bull or just rutting elk experience during archery season...or maybe just harvesting any elk it can be had.

Move along troll

Not trolling. Genuinely curious. Sure there are big bulls lots of places but fella here is trying to do something more educated than winging a dart at a map. Some places are better than others and waiting 9 years is worth figuring that out before the points are committed.

The LQ units are better than the general, because less dudes and the elk tend to act like elk. The trophy quality is better, too.

For the record I never asked for any locations just whether a type 9 license would be the best for archery with 9 points. With that said the information people provided has been very helpful and I'm very greatful for that.

If I'm reading the regs right a type 1 general tag is a longer any weapon season with weapon specific dates? A type 9 is a 2 week archery only tag?

For the record although I've had my fair share of success I'd probably shoot any 5 point. Moving forward I'm looking to get into a 3-4 point rotation. Eight or so years ago I dumped 5 points in CO and that turned out to be the best decision. I get thunt a 2-3 point unit with great hunting.

Type 9 is archery only, all of September.

Type 1 is any weapon with different possibilities to use it for archery. Some all of September. Some 15-30th. Some can’t archery hunt on a type 1. You will have to look at area specific regulations.

With 9 points and you are commited to archery and not concerned about rifle hunting maybe after, there are at least a couple type 9 pretty close to me I'd hunt in a heartbeat. My son has 11 and wants to be able to archery and then rifle hunt if needed or I'd put him in for one of those. For me the question would be if I wanted to hunt general and be able to use it with a rifle and archery or just archery. I'd personally be confident with getting a good bull with either.

If you have the time and are comfortable getting back into the backcountry and or around grizz, the general tag can ve very good. Where else can you hunt bulls in the rut with a rifle on a general tag? The last general bull I shot(as a NR), was 320+ and I always see plenty of good bulls. But... it takes work and I did have a grizz encounter on that one.

I'm in the camp of hunting WY as much as you can, so I would pick something you can draw and hunt. Then move towards your next WY tag.
