WY type 9 unit 54 bull elk

Is anyone familiar with this area? Why are the amount of applicants for this area so low compared to the other surrounding areas if 54 is known for having big bulls... Any ideas?

I've done a lot of research trying to find out why there aren't more people putting in for this area, but nothing adds up... Any help would be great!

Pretty easy really.

- It's an archery only tag, which means just that.

- It's a known as a Grizzly bear area and people don't want to deal with that.

My guess would have been bears.
There were 25 type 9 tags in 2011 and only 10 for 2012 with 2 going to non residents. It took 5 points to draw them as well.

Maybe the herd numbers are down as well.

I was just looking at some of the type 9 areas in getting ready for the upcoming draw. Looks like there were 0 tags left over for the random draw even if you paid the special money so if you don't have the required points you don't even have a slim chance of drawing in the random draw.

Well according to the WY game and fish website it said that 100% drew with 3 points in type 9, unit 54... my brother and I have 4 points... so unless the odds change a lot, we should have a great chance of drawing....?

The end date for the type 9 tag for the new area will stay the same, Sept 30. The type 1's start Oct 1. As mentioned on eastmans, that's generally a winter snow hunt. The old area 54 only included Ohara and Bald Ridge, and Hart Mt. Access is a PITA from what I have read and generally not worth the trouble for most archery guys. The new area will put you up on top at BearTooth overlook down past Dillworth Bench, and without looking again, may take in Rattlesnake.
The new area might be great but you're not the only guy posting about it so who knows what odds will be. Then there are the bears...
You could always get a type 4 cow tag and spend a season figuring it out, that rifle hunt starts Sept 1 also. Might be $600 well spent.

Looks to me that only 1 person applied with 4 points and no one applied with 3 points. Even with 2 points the odds were 50% (4 for 2 tags). Wonder if that will happen again?
