Wow. I’m impressed with Starlink!

I live in mountain foothills, decently rural area. My house is in a depression between two ridges, so we cannot get the local LOS internet options. No cable or fiber out here. Satellite options like Viasat and Hughes are way too slow for some of my work. Our only option for a while was 4G-home which was incredibly unreliable, and poor on performance.

I got Starlink three years ago which completely changed the game for us. We can both be on video calls and streaming a TV all at once, full speed. Speeds are usually 75-150mbps. In three years it has gone out exactly once (the day Starlink went live on T-mobile) including through some pretty stormy winters. It's been so good I got it at a second property that is extremely rural. Works like a charm there, too.

I'm glad that you all are enjoying the ability to bring technology to the backwoods, but just remember, that's one less hurdle for everyone else that wants to build a cabin/house/whatever in the backcountry that we all want to keep unpopulated!

Needed faster internet when my wife started working from home. Been happy with star link.

Fast and they have always charged the same unlike every other internet provider I have had.

I got mine about 5 years ago and it was/is amazing. The local Kinetic folks finally got fiber out in the sticks where I live about 2 years ago but I've rolled my setup back out a few times since I got fiber. It was a Godsend having it when Helene about wiped us off the map and were without power for 2 weeks +.
The great thing about having it as a standby/emergency system is how quick it is to reactivate and be back online.

Our download speed at the house is anywhere between 0-15mbps and can be intermittent. We are thinking of switching as well.

I just ordered, cost me $22 bucks, including them installing (passed on that), to give it a try.

I just ordered a starlink unit for our house, I’m really excited to give Xfinity the boot. How are you guys installing these for permanent use? I have an adobe flat roof house, drilling holes to run cables inside isn’t a real option. Did you guys buy the starlink brand mounts or have any of you built your own mount that you attached to your house?

Not sure how to get around drilling unless you run a cord out a vent, or window?

I use starlink mounts, one is on my eave other is the flag pole adapter, both work well

I am two months in on my Starlink. I could not be happier with the service. Cheaper and way better than the interenet that was available at my home. 10/10

Do you move your unit between the two mounts or do you have one on each?

I’ll figure out the comm line routing it’s just not as easy as punching a hole into your attic and fishing it down the wall.

separate units but I have a couple buddies who move them back and forth

When I saw it mentioned in the black Friday thread, I was a little surprised to see it priced above $100. I'd have signed up for several months if it were, but I remember when home WiFi just started and it seemed like an updated unit needed purchased every 6 months.

Who has had their original starlink for a few years?
We are on 3 years with ours. But it’s a regular size one. No issues.

I got my starlink mini last fall and its amazing!

I didnt really want to get it at first because I like being able to unplug when I get out and reflect on life. However, the starlink allows me to work from a tent... It allows me to be out in the woods with my family more.

I just need to be disciplined enough to not veg out on youtube and rokslide.

Starlink comprises somewhere around 75% of currently orbiting satellites and they are about 1/6th of the way through their plan. The satellites have a lifespan of about 5 years and the newer ones weigh about 1700lbs. They just burn up in the atmosphere when they're decommissioned. That, aside from the astronomy and spaceflight implications.

As a sportsman/outdoorsman I don't know how that would not bother a person.

But, I didn't want to start an argument. I just wanted to know if any of you guys that have it and are excited about it think about that and are bothered by it. I may end up using it someday, but I don't know. We'll see.
If they burn up in the atmosphere, what's the problem there? It's not like the landscape would be covered in broken down satellites.

As for astronomy, I've always thought it was cool to look up into the night sky and search for satellites and shooting stars.

The starlink allows me the ability to communicate with people in town when I'm out in the woods. It allows me the ability to be out in the woods with my family more often...

Personally, the only downside to it that I see is if people are just going to use it to veg out, but thats an internet as a whole kind of thing. I'm definitely going to use it to my advantage.

My siblings and I went in together to get my parents a years worth of starlink because their Internet was so terrible it was painful to try to videocall them or even talk on the phone since they no longer have a land line. It is useful!

I also worry about dark skies. However, the more immediate threat to that is the ever growing population and emergence of stupid bright LED lights
