Would You Hunt Elk in July??

I would do it in a heartbeat, not because I have never killed an elk, but because there is a reason for the depredation permits. I would rather put it in my freezer than have a farmer gut shoot it so it gets off the field and let it rot or have to have the state pay someone to snipe them. Here whitetails are hated by farmers and I know lots of farmers who kill them in the summer and let them rot instead of watching them eat their crops. Meat is meat and an elk has a lot of meat, I eat meat.

These hunts are bull only from May to July, the reason for the tags are ag damage, and I’m guessing they don’t want you to kill mothers. The cow tags start August 15, as well as more bull tags. The bulls will pretty much be done growing as they strip their velvet starting around August 8. Just like hunting mule deer opening weekend of archery, they’re in velvet. I tell ya what, if I do the hunt, I’ll fill y’all in on the difficulty, the taste of the meat and the trophy quality!

I know some big bulls have been killed during this hunt, and I know that there are hardly any other hunts in the country where you get the opportunity to hunt bulls in velvet!

I'd say go for it!

I don't know when Elk shed hair, but I tell ya, we road-killed a cow moose a few years ago early in the season with a dump truck. $6K damage and it was only going 20 mph. Darted out in front of the driver in the very early morning. Anyway, I dressed it before the wildlife trooper could get there to take care of it. That was the hairiest SOB I've ever seen in my life. Absolute nightmare to try to keep clean. Not sure if the elk would be the same. I'd see if I could get the rancher to go get it with a loader and skin that sucker hanging like they do beef!

Good luck, love to hear how it turns out. Should be excellent eating!

You mean like they do on the reservations? Had a customer last year up on the Blackfoot reservation show me his bull he killed. A 6pt in velvet he shot off of an alfalfa field. Was a cool euro mount.
