Wool insoles in mountain boots for warmth - anyone tried it, does it work? I don’t like the moisture retention of insulated boots, and am wondering if wool insoles are a good way to take uninsulated boots into the late season.

I used a heavy duty space blanket, reflective mylar on foam. It helped a little bit. Thermal conductivity of water is high...so anything you can do to keep your foot dry and not making contact with the cold sole will help.

I've done wool insoles in my pacs, but I've never had non pacs with enough room for the felt.

I've been using the super feet merino insoles for about 3-4 years now. I've used them in +30C (86F) and -40C/F (actual, not windchill) and they have worked really well for me. They do have a high arch though so be aware of that. You can usually try them on at places that sell them but if you have a flat to medium arch they may not work. I have them in my LOWA ticams with either a smartwool or icebreker heavy sock and if i'm moving my feet stay warm.

I also have the Superfeet Merino insoles that I wear in Meindl Alaska Hunter and Hanwag Trapper boots. They are based on the popular Superfeet Green base and seemingly take up no more volume in boots as the Green. I like that fact that they add some extra warmth without taking up additional real estate leaving some wiggle room for going with heavier socks if needed .

My feet do very well on the Superfeet Green but, to each his own on footwear fit & comfort. I have low arches and yet my Podiatrist recommends I add additional padding to raise the arch on the Superfeet Green to help prevent the reoccurrence of Plantar Fasciitis so I don't really consider them to have a high arch but there certainly is an adjustment period if you aren't used to using a similar insole.
