Well we had 101 mph winds last night in Rapid CIty. Most places west of the Missouri in SD were 80's-90's. A lot of damage. 27,000 people without power this morning. Power crews just getting out becasue winds down to 40-60 and it has been deemed safe.

If this were anywhere else this would have been a cataclysmic event with non stop media coverage. Disasters declared etc etc etc. The storm or wind would have had a name. As it is I'd be willing to bet most on here will never hear a thing about it other than this post. Perspective, coverage, and narratives can be a powerful thing.

Wyoming had a gust measured at 144mph last night. A gust of 109 was measured in Boulder, Colorado. Winter Park and Rocky Flats both had measurements over 100. Fort Collins had a gust at nearly 70 and many other small towns along the front range experienced winds anywhere from 50-80mph throughout the night.

Over 100,000 people without power, some due to intentional shutoffs to mitigate wildfire risk and others due to loss where it was left on.

No state of disaster. No name for the storm. Media coverage no more extreme than any other unusually severe weather event. What is your point?

That’s roughly a 1/4 of your population, I’d call that that significant but also be glad the media isn’t giving it attention or you would be dealing with a panic mentality too.

The power just turned back on after shutting down yesterday. The wind broke some power poles and it appears someone hit the powerline on the freeway.

I saw the power company crew working on setting poles in the wind.

I had two trees across my driveway and one top broke off and hit the power lines but didn't break anything.

In town big fir trees tipped over onto houses. I saw one pickup on its side and a friend called and said he saw a semi tip over and slide down the road.

I'm just glad to have flushing toilets again. Life in the west is exciting.

We were around the century mark here too. We didn't even lose power.....trucks blew over but the lights stayed on.

The wind is why many of us have a number of inside hobbies to do when it’s time to hunker down. I will always remember living in Casper when wife #1 and I were stir crazy and wanted to get out and walk around the mall. We were right behind a U-Haul truck that blew over at a stop light. lol

Some times it’s best to just stay home and reload or tie flies. 🙂

eh, we had the same speeds up here palmer wasilla area last week. coworker was out of power for 4 days with it being 5 degrees out.

I don't know what our wind speeds were but it took out one of my big Spruce trees that was planted by previous owner. The top of it bent the heck out of a chain link fence. Would have worked on the tree but spent most of the day sorting through underground power supply that the roots took out. It feeds my septic pump so somewhat of an emergency. I'll deal with the tree this weekend.

We're in Rapid. I woke up at 3am this morning hearing a big pine hit the ground outside my window. Then more. That train sound...

We have 10 trees down, not a one hit the house or garage. Handrail on the deck got damaged. That's it. I should go buy a lottery ticket. Also, I have firewood for the next few years if I get off my ass and ride the saw.

And you're right. If it was in the east everybody would have to hear about it.

Im a lineman for a co-op in kentucky. A couple years ago in march or april we had sustained 50-75mph straight line winds for about 12 hours. Working in it was crazy! Nowhere to hide from it and flying a bucket was close to impossible. I couldnt imagine 100 mph winds. We would be working for weeks. Good luck on the cleanup of you had any property damage.

Yep, lack of East Coast concern is just the same as our wildfire season, they have a conniption fit when they get smoke from Canadian fires.
