I'm not a long range shooter in any respect, but I do enjoy practicing long range shots at steel and was wondering if there is anything I could do to my standard .338 win mag to make it perform better at range that would be worth doing to it. Or, should I just work up a good hand load and put good optics on it and call it macaroni? I know I don't like the trigger, but not sure if I should start with something else. Also, I'm in the Coeur d' Alene, Idaho area and if anyone knows a badass gunsmith in that area, let me know.

I would try either 225gr Accubonds or 250 Berger bullets in good handloads, put a muzzle brake on it, swap the trigger to a Timney or Jewell, put a good scope on it, make sure the barrel is floated, and bed the stock.

You can start with something else but you would have to do much of the same stuff to any factory rifle.

Which model 70 is it ? most of the true "model 70's" had arguably the best and most foolproof trigger ever devised and most any person that knows triggers can tune one (which requires hones and such tools) If it's a standard wood stocked 70 I'd put it into a McMillan Edge to start with, put good quality lightweight scope mounts on it, bed it, maybe a brake (I magnaported a couple of mine and it noticeably helped without the confounded "crack" ) a lot depends on where you're bound with the project for overall weight too, 338 with 225 Accubonds is THE game killer, you can step up to 250's but I would not for longer range intent as the 225 will surprise

Contact Shawn at defensive edge. He is in that part of the state.
I would go with a trigger, stock and the best scope you can buy. Depending on what you intend to do with the gun a smith should be able to help you make the right decisions and not just try to sell you something.
