Winchester 70 dream build

I do not hand load. Was hoping to stay away from that if possible. Realistic hunting range 400-450. I got an antlope passed that last year but that was s bad decision that turned out ok. So far 154 and 162 sst white tail and superformance shoot the best. It doesn't like cx or Barnes mono bullets. How available is the 25 prc? Or is it mainly handload
With your magnum bolt face, non-reloader, and 400-450y range, I would suggest you keep it as a 7RM. Cut and thread the barrel. Buy a suppressor. Then, when you either shoot out the barrel or get sick of the recoil, I would go 6.5prc personally. Least amount of recoil for a magnum bolt face with good factory ammo choices that I can think of. I can’t think of a single cartridge with a magnum bolt face that can’t kill out well beyond your specified ranges.

Someone that swaps a 7RM barrel out for a 7prc barrel without the barrel being shot out first has more money than sense, even if the barrel was $50.

Building rifles has little to do with sense. Whatever makes you happy however silly it might be.
You are right. For someone wanting to spend less money and/or get proficient at hitting their target rather than doing something silly, I stand by what I said. I don’t know where the rp sits, but I will always encourage people to get better at what they are doing rather than to spend their money to try and buy a shortcut that isn’t there.

I rebarreled an M70 30-06 to a 7-08. Love the rifle but it was a pain to get the short action cartridges to feed right. It’s still a little finicky, but it works. Just something to be mindful of.
Good to know. I assumed the crf would make this less of an issue. Though reducing assumptions was part of what I wanted to achieve with this post

Agree with the least amount of recoil for given game and distance and I'm old enough to have pretended to be 10 ft tall bullet proof only to be proven wrong. I would have preferred standard bolt face though the left hand thing made me less picky. A 25.06, or fast twist 270 is really what I wanted. I can find a pre 64 bolt but not a post 64 classic bolt with standard face.

the problem with mine was the rear of the shorter and fatter cartridge would be pushed down into the magazine box and the bolt would slide right over them.

someone else would know better than me but i believe a smith can install a small sleeve in the bolt face to reduce it to a standard size. I could be heaps wrong though.

I would try the factory Nosler 175 Partition load sold at Midway and in stock, to see how it shoots in your Win Mod 70 7 Mag rifle. It’s been a go to bullet for many 7Mags from the early 7MM Mashburn Mag wildcats, 7Wea Mag to the 7Rem Mag. I had mentors growing up who made yearly multi bag hunts in the Yukon, BC etc, plus hunted the world with that 175 grain Nosler / 7mm mag combination with great success for decades. Since you don’t reload, $109 a box could be a deal for you.

25-6.5prc is a touch faster than a 25-06, basically negligible.
270 cal, you could get a fast twist 270wsm or the 6.8 western. Though the .277 caliber won’t be much different than a .284 (7mm). Literally less than two pieces of paper thickness.

A magnum bolt face isn’t the end of the world, there are still choices out there!

How did you fix it? I have no idea but curious if a spacer and spring with shorter portions (arms?) Would work?

This started life as an Extreme Weather (US built, 2013 vintage) in 264 mag, burnt the barrel out and had it reincarnated late last year. Stockys VG stock, IBI standard hunter 24" 1-7.5" and IBI brake, TImney trigger and Leupold VX5. Chambered in 7prc
- Stock was a gong show, stockys made it right but expect fitment issues. Reach out to them and hopefully you have the same level of service I did. I do find the stock a tad short, although the LOP is similar to a few of my other rifles.
- the VX5 isn't tracking which seems par for the course.
- very impressed by the barrel and how its performing across the board with several factory ammo options. I have not hand loaded yet.

Yes two ceramic spacers, and a short action spring and follower. The short action follower you can see is not quite long enough to accommodate my longer 7-08 cartridges, so they are a bit finicky to load because the rear of the cartridge wants to tilt behind the follower, but once I get them in they feed fine, unlike before.
