Winchest model 70. Worth upgrading stock?

I had a beloved M70 that was gifted to me when I was a kid. Decent looking wood stock. The rifle shot “OK”, but not what I wanted. When I started backpack hunting, the rifle really started to take a beating. Multiple days in wet weather, salt air, etc.

I looked at changing the stock, trigger and possibly the barrel. M70s just don’t have the options the 700 action does.

Ultimately, I decided to buy a new rifle, a Christensen Ridgeline. It was about the same price as the upgrades I wanted for the M70. Now I have a remington 700 long action that has endless options for upgrade parts should I ever choose. The rifle shoots better that I ever would have imagined, is a pleasure to carry and very durable for my style of hunting. Made in USA to boot....

^ that first picture the Featherweight barrel almost looks like a bull barrel, must have been the angle- 2nd pic looks normal

what stock did you go with?

The stock is a B&C. Yup still the original barrel, just a weird angle I guess.

I have a M70 featherweight that I swapped stocks on. The wood was getting beat up somewhat and I hunt in a lot of crummy weather. I have never bedded a stock before but it was quite easy using Marine Tex grey. If I do my part it will shoot under 1moa. I lightened the trigger pull and it feels quite good.

know its been a while but im looking to do the same to my m70. Whats the weight on that rig?

I replaced the stock on my late 90s W70 with a B&C and rebarreled with a Bartlein 5R and replaced the trigger with a Timney. This is the most accurate rifle I own and cost half the $$ of 2 other rifles I own. It is my go to hunting rifle. Action is smooth as glass and dependable.

No shame in wood. I swapped out my Wally m70 stock for a wood stock. Shortened the fore end and routed out a cavity in the butt. Refinished and bedded it. Looks like maple. Felt so good I swapped out all my synthetic stocks for wood excepting my tikka. I hate synthetic stocks when it’s cold out and I don’t hunt in the summer.

My Winchester 70 came with the Bell and Carlson sporter stock and I’d say it’s a good stock for the money. I do wish the stock came with checkering as the grip doesn’t have much vertical surface and the finish is not very grippy in wet weather or with sweaty hands.

I have been putting my hunting Mod. 70's in Hogue overmolded stocks. I like the feel and how they are quite in the brush. They weight 38 ozs.
