Will Medium height rings work with a 40 mm Rifle Scope or can you get away with Low?

Wondering what height Rings would be required for a 40 mm Rifle Scope, medium or low? Trying to help select the right 1's for a friend as we rarely buy new rifle scopes which his GF is looking to buy with the rings with the right height rings as a Xmas Gift?

Depends entirely on what its going on, but for a bolt action with a factory stock low would be normal height for a 40-42mm scope. I’ve even used extra lows a couple times. Mediums will be too high on most factory stocks.

Rem 700 BDL .06 SS, maybe for a Burris Fullfield 3-9 x 40 with Burris Signature Scope Rings. Was not aware Different Rifles had :difference Clearances needs?
He has an old Simmons but wants to upgrade his scope and use Burris Signature Rings with the inserts.
Thanks for the replies.

The size of the eye piece is a bigger issue than the size of the objective with many of today's scopes. I had to run Warne Mountain Tech 1" mediums with Burris XTR bases to get clearance for the bolt handle on my Remington 700 with a Trijicon Huron 3-9. Contrast that with a Burris Droptine on that rifle, with low rings and the same bases there's enough clearance.

If he's going to run a Burris Fullfield (older version), low rings should be fine.

Just wanted to be sure dislike having to return something as some places are not easy to return something. Just past experience.
Thanks for the Help!
