Will higher gas prices change your plans

I got the Bolt, its had a lot more power and better range even with the recalled battery. I have a family homestead thats rural. Even at $0.18 a KWH my commute is still only $5 vs $26 in gas.

You jest but that's not the worst idea I've ever heard. LOL

My wife has driven a Prius for the past 14 years. She loves them. We bought her a new one last year and promptly put 5k miles on it driving from TX to Oregon and back through Montana and Yellowstone/Teton, etc. I drove the whole way and even though I'm 6'4" and 215, I actually liked the car. We averaged nearly 60 mpg. over those 5k miles. As a conservative, I'm pretty happy about that.
60mpg is incredible! I wonder if I could get to my hunting spot in a Prius with a 1.5" lift and some AT tires?I may have to consider this option if gas gets to $8 a gallon.

I could get to the place I camped last year in one. But not to the spot where I parked to hike in. Years ago I drove a VW Golf TDI (only 52 mpg) and I loaded at least 4 deer in that one over the years. LOL Where there's a will, there's a way!

I wonder if you could tow a micro trailer with an ATV? Park at the bottom and take the ATV up service roads.

Looks like 1,500 lb tow capacity. My 10' aluminum flatbed weighs under 600 with the spare tire. So it would be possible.

How many kWH to fully charge up the vehicle? (and how long at 110V? How long at 220V?) and... does that push the electric bill billing tier rate for your home up into that topmost billing tier?

Asking that later question because out here now, probably to encourage people to be more frugal with their electricity usage, SoCal Edison has different billing tiers for different times of the day and I think also for different amounts above what they think a typical home in your area uses as a baseline.

HaHA! that's the first Prius I've ever scene with A/T looking tires on it! Cool Beans man!
 
My driving is approx 14,000 miles per year
With the working from home thing, I think I've been less than 10,000 pretty consistently.

Let's see...

Last vehicle purchased used with 32K on it in 2018.
Only has 62.8K on it now.

Round off to 62K = 30K/ 4yrs = 7,500mi per year!

If you live in snow country they are about useless.

I don’t know, I don’t have one. One of my neighbors who is one of those greenie engineer types says his Leaf’s power consumption equates to .40 gal gasoline based on $3/gal at the pump. No oil changes is nice too. $5K to redo the battery isn’t so nice. Also I see them going down the road in the winter scraping ice off the inside of the windows because the defrost zaps the range. Haha.
 
If everyone wanted and electric car tomorrow and had the money for it, it's not even possible. There aren't enough vehicles and the infrastructure is not even in place to support charging them all. Imagine trying to find a charging station if you needed it. There would be a line a mile long. It's a great way to control people. With hardly any charging stations people will be limited to the range they can travel. To quick charge a battery requires a lot of power. Imagine how many new stations would need to be in place for this to be a viable option. California is already having blackouts, what would happen if the entire state went to EV's. I think EV's are a great idea but we really aren't there yet to implement them everywhere. The politicians are trying to force the issue with the gas prices without even having a real solution in place. Pretty despicable.

The solution for most would be night charging at home when energy demand is low. That wouldn't work for everyone though.

The issue you bring up is the reason Elon Musk is calling for more oil production.
 
No - rising gas prices won't affect my hunting plans. My trips are typically planned a year or so in advance and I don't plan to cancel anything or stop hunting But, I am getting much more thoughtful about the money I spend on other discretionary items. My 2 cents worth on EVs: I think EVs have a place. I live in a big city and there are lots of drivers here that drive less than 10 miles a day, don't need a large vehicle and can plug their cars in at home each night. My neighborhood is getting more EVs everyday - especially as second cars. But, after working in the oil/gas industry for the last 35 years I can confidently say that we will have a hydrocarbon based economy for the next 25 - 30 years. We can either produce the oil/gas in the US, feeding money into local economies, or send our money overseas to Russia, Saudi... And, our electricity production which powers the EVs is increasingly coming from oil and gas. So, IMO nothing at all wrong with having an EV, but producing oil & gas in the US is a better alternative than buying from overseas. I'll watch my spending on other items and keep on shooting and hunting!
 
If I decided to hunt in Montana it would be a 4400 mile round trip. I would guess newer trucks get around 20 mpg highway. That's 220 gallons of gas. If prices went up $2/gallon, that's $440 more than expected. Most of us spend a crazy amount on gear, tags, vehicles ect. It sucks but $440 just doesn't seem like a deal breaker to me. I would work O.T. or sell something if I didn't have the money.
 
It definitely makes me second guess the longer trips. Hunting trips not so much but my summer bowfishing might take a hit.

Nope, still going out. Without hunting, i would partake too much in graveling in disgust at the policies being passed with nothing to take my mind off of it. At least while hunting i can be pissed and still forget about it while out hunting
 
New awesome truck $50k, Sitka Jacket and pants $1200, new tree stand $600, Spotting scope $600, Bow $1200, rifle and scope $2500. An extra $40/tank for gas? Way too much money.
