Will higher gas prices change your plans

I'll be strapped as it is due to a move back to the midwest next month. I think I'm gonna hunker down and learn my new area for the next couple of seasons. I haven't hunted from a treestand in years, so I'll likely get back into that this fall. I also want to hunt some grouse. There's plenty of fishing to catch up on as well.

I'm kind of excited to just sit in a stand and take in nature in silent tranquility, as opposed to the grind of the rockies/cascades I've become accustomed to. It seems like a great time to switch things up and save some cash at the same time. I'll keep building points in the meantime though, for future western hunts.

Those guys making those payments on those "3 ton trucks" built your house, your neighbors house and my house. They built the roads and driveways that you use and they landscaped your yard. I guess maybe they can start strapping lumber and drywall on top of a prius in the future. Cause we all now that batteries and electric cars are super cheap and the way of the future. Government will be issuing one to everyone with their free cell phones. Cant wait.

Let me explain in simpler terms:

A guy makes a terrible economic decision to go into excessive debit on a large vehicle he can’t afford and doesn’t actually need. Then fuel prices suddenly go up due to complex geopolitical tensions and he fancies himself as having all of the expert solutions. If you pay close attention to his solutions, he is actually suggesting that we move to government controlled fuel imports and exports and price controls vs. privatization. He can’t stand the idea that someone else, particularly a guy who also hunts, might have made a different series of decisions that led to a different set of outcomes and our said example cannot tolerate any ideas, beliefs or decisions that do not exactly align with his own set of beliefs, ideas and decisions, so he lashes out like a child.

This sound familiar? This guy might be you.

We live in a rural community where on paper an EV makes sense. Our power is high, but so are fuel costs. Unfortunately our road system is still in its infancy with very little hope for meaningful improvement. I hope there are higher clearance models on the horizon. Several of my community members got on a used Nissan Leaf kick here 4-5 years ago. Most find them inappropriate for the conditions if they are honest about it.

I got the Bolt, its had a lot more power and better range even with the recalled battery. I have a family homestead thats rural. Even at $0.18 a KWH my commute is still only $5 vs $26 in gas.

Nope, not me. I just assumed you drove a Prius too. I am an insurance agent. Nobody can do without my trade either. I was defending those ton truck drivers. I got your point.

The only downside of this scenario will be that a few guy who make ~$700 monthly payments on 3 ton trucks that they commute to and from the suburbs with on the daily will attempt to “Trumpslain” global fuel economics to you on a hunting forum.

I get a lot of shit from my coworkers too! haha! Well my savings pays for my car payment, electricity, tires, insurance, washer fluid ...ect and I still have money in my pocket at the end of the month.

I just need to tint my windows so i dont get recognized ....lol

I don't know about rich, but I do know that a lot of folks here think nothing of spending 4-5x on any particular item than I would. Could be rich. Could be wasteful. Not my place to say really.

It won't necessarily affect my hunting pla s but does affect my fishing plans. I fish year round where I live, and the lake is 3 hours away. We keep a camper there stored so we have a place close to stay that's cheap. We'll now; it just brought my gas bill to get to the lake over double what it was last year.
It won't effect my hunting as most is fairly close at home and have one trip planned to CO that I'll do still as it's a one time of year thing.
For us, though, it will also affect everything else around us from food to heat, etc. That's where it's going to hit most people. I still have meat and fish in thr freezer but there are still things that we buy that I can't hunt or fish for that will go up significantly in price due to fuel costs in one way or the other.

My goal is to spend the same number of days in the field for turkey and bear this spring. I might do fewer weekends, but stay out for multiple days when I do go. My son can get two turkeys. I was thinking about bringing my cooler with ice like I do elk hunting. If he gets one at our first spot I can get it cleaned and on ice before heading to the next spot for a hike in and camp out. Normally we probably would have drove home and headed back out the next day.

That last fill up stung at $140!

I'll still be hunting (if MT cooperates), but I will be driving slower while towing the trailer. What's going to hurt is fuel for the boat, already looking at ways to reduce number of trips to mainland.

Break out the Yak and fish inshore/freshwater here by the house.

And. on a side note; if the Dems are so giddy on this green initiative,
and love them some Socialism then why dont they just buy everybody
a Prius and call it done?

You jest but that's not the worst idea I've ever heard. LOL

My wife has driven a Prius for the past 14 years. She loves them. We bought her a new one last year and promptly put 5k miles on it driving from TX to Oregon and back through Montana and Yellowstone/Teton, etc. I drove the whole way and even though I'm 6'4" and 215, I actually liked the car. We averaged nearly 60 mpg. over those 5k miles. As a conservative, I'm pretty happy about that.

Nothing will change for me. Montana, Wyoming, Illinois, Alaska and whatever else I draw.

Hunting has never been cheap and $5+ gallon fuel will not slow me down.

Not really. Work from home, so don't burn much anyway other than when driving out to hunt on the weekends.

BUT... it's slowing me down like crazy cause all these broke-n-po mofos are all now droppin' down their speeds on the FWY's (even more then the usual affect that having damn Prius's on the road already does) in an attempt to save mileage and it's uber aggravating to those of us whose throttle only has two settings.. Fast and FASTER!!

So now I'm *trying* to leave even a scosche earlier so I can do like 75-85 rather than 85-95 at butt-thirty in the morning on the long stretches of Fwy to get out of the cities.

I live close to work and can telework. I also drive a car most of the time averaging 32 mpg. My driving is approx 14,000 miles per year @ 32mpg + 3000 miles per year @17 mpg (truck). The difference in cost between 3$ and 4.50$ (5$ diesel) is ~1000$, or 85$ per month. I can likely make up this difference in the budget, but I also have more than enough margin to take the hit.

Now, I think there definitely are people that will be affected more negatively, alot more than are represented in the forum. For them it may be a much more difficult decision on how much or where to hunt. I am very thankful that is not my position.
