Will a 22LR turn a dog?

Had a minor encounter with a couple dogs running a deer a few years ago.
Wondered ever since about a .22 LR in that situation.

I have a Taurus TX 22 Compact that shoots 38 grain HP’s very well and has been completely reliable for about 2k rounds.

It’s basically no recoil and I can stay in target better with it than anything else. Also weighs nothing.

Would this be enough for a dog deterrent?

Are you shooting the dog or expecting the noise to deter them? I don't expect the noise to deter most hunting dogs.

You are trying to kill them? Or scare them?

I’ve never worried about dogs chasing deer. They are just dogs doing dog things. And they are just as likely to run a nice deer to me as scare one away from me.

Edit - if you are thinking of a self-defense scenario from “dogs guarding a kill”, then I would rather have your .22 than nothing, but I always carry a more capable firearm.

My apologies for not being clear.

Would a 22LR pistol (3.5” barrel) shooting a 38 grain HP be able to kill a dog in a defense situation?
Or (worst case scenario) at least change its mind/direction?

Not relying on the noise to scare them.
Them chasing the deer is just how they ended up close to me. That kinda is what it is.

Yes if hit in the right spot.
I totally understand and deal with neighbors dogs running deer every year but unless they charge than you may get a trip to jail.
And you shouldn’t kill one anyway.
If they charge than game on unless your on there property.

Another clarification.

It’s not about the dogs running deer. I don’t blame the dogs for that.

I’m wondering about a defensive situation against a dog with the pistol and ammo mentioned.

I’m not looking to wack the neighbors dog because they are running deer.

A much more viable solution would be bear spray. With one sweep you would easily deter multiple dogs, humans to.

Never considered spray.

May have to look into that.

Yes, it will work. Wouldn't be my first choice, just because I'm hesitant to consider any 22 ammo completely reliable, but far better than nothing.

Second the bear spray recommendation.

Agree with that.

The only “testing” I’ve done with them are on squirrels. They pass through at rifle velocity to around 40 yards with no problem.

American Eagle 38 HP is what I’m using.

Yes… and being able to actually hit what you want matters . 5 38gr HP’s in the ribs are much more of a deterrent than missing with a 124gr gr gold dot.
I’ve got a similar pistol (kektec p17) that I shoot better than anything else and I’m extremely confident in

Had a friend of mine encounter a vicious pit bull that charged him and his kids in his own yard. Dog was very close, but he said his little .22 LR to its head was like a light switch. Thankfully he had it on him.

I've burned a ton of that ammo. Good stuff

When I started trying to kill stuff with a pistol. I switched over to the winchester superX. 40gr. That big ol hollow point just seems to slaps the hell outta stuff

Only experience with dogs and .22 ammo, I put my dear old boy down this year with a .22 mag, it was very very quick, but I imagine I it would need to be a cns hit. He was 140lb Great Dane so about as big as a dog can get. One of the toughest things I’ve ever done

Betting the guy running the dog is also armed. Popping one from a tree stand is a great way to start a situation that may escalate out of hand fast.

A 22 to the head will kill a dog, 22 to the body might but not quickly. Would not be my pick for a stopping shot at a running animal. Would work fine pressed to its head if its actually on you.

Bear spray will not work on a determined canine,I know as we raise these and not one would stop attacking when ordered even with spray.
