Fascinated by wild horse island lately. I make it down to Kalispell a few times a year, and I'm just wondering about access to it.

I just read that they pulled 60 sheep off of it, but I'd imagine there are still some good rams to see. Any locals that can shed some info in general?

I rented a boat and circled the island two summers ago--we saw a couple monster mulies and then encountered a herd of sheep (at least twenty or so) on some rocks above the beach. Pretty close up. No monster rams that we saw, but it was a really awesome day trip. I would definitely do it again. If I remember correctly, I got the sense that the rental boat companies don't want you to land on the island, but there are some local tour guides who will take you ashore. We opted to just cruise the shorelines and the bays and glass. I have some pictures on my other computer that I'll try to post up here later.

Cool place to hike around, but I haven't been there since Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp in high school. If I remember correctly, there is only one place to actually get on to the shore because there is some private property, or maybe the dock is private so you can't use it. Don't remember for sure. It is on the reservation, so I'm going to guess hunting is out.

In researching I found there is private land on the shorelines. Does it limit much of the area that you can hike?

If I remember correctly it just limits where you can get on shore. There's a hiking trail to lead you up to the top.

When I lived there I would go out every couple of years and hike around. I was out there in 2012 and took allot of pics. Saw tons of sheep but only a few mule deer. Here a few pics.
