Wide sleeping bag

I have a KUIU 15deg bag which is a solid bag. That being said I find myself wrapped up in it throughout the night and have a hard time sleeping in it because I’m a side sleeper and I toss and turn. Does anyone have experience with a wider bag than the standard mummy style bag? I strictly backpack hunt so being light weight is a must, but I need something wider. I’m 5’ 10” and 190 lbs. thanks for any options you have!

I bought a western mountaineering terralite last year due to it being wider and thinking i would like the extra room for side sleeping.

I used it 14 nights in Wyoming last year and realized the extra room was too much room for me, I was colder than my old mountain hardware piute, That said I am a bit smaller than you at 5'9 160 and think I will go back to my old bag for most hunts or maybe get something new.

The terralite is a very nice bag, very well made but just didn't work great for me.

Are you looking for a wider 15 degree bag? Or a wide bag in another temp rating? The Terralite that was mentioned above is a 25 degree bag. The Valandre Bloody Mary is in that 15-20 degree range, with a draft collar you can run like three different ways depending on temps

Thanks for the reply! I have a really hard time sleeping in the kuiu bag. It fits me well if I were to sleep on my back, but once I start tossing and turning I get all tangled up. Hoping I can find a solid bad that’s light weight and noticeably wider!

I went with a WM badger bag for the extra room in shoulders and hips. I also have some quilts that I like to use. Quilts are great for a side sleeper and weigh less than a bag.

That bag I had in Wyoming last year was a Western Mountaineering Kodiak, it's fairly wide but it's a zero degree bag. The Badger is the 15 degree version of it. Ponderosa is a semi rectangular 15 degree bag, Sequoia is semi rectangular 5 degree both from WM

I’m a cold sleeper so I would say 15deg or lower...

Only thing is, going to a wider bag it's more space to heat up and a weight penalty over a mummy bag. It's the tradeoff

I have stuck with BA simply cause I toss and roll all night. 6’ 215 with broad shoulders. Used the older version lost ranger, but 20” pad was not enough but I felt the bag was ok for shoulder room- but not fantastic. Went to a long/wide encampment. Huge room and 25” pad is awesome- but feet get cold even with filling the bottom of the bag with clothes.
New BA models have side zips to offer more shoulder/hip room and use the new stretchy pad holder to get a larger pad under you. I have not upgraded yet and they are not the lightest bag- but may be something you could look into as another option.

Mine is like 3lb 1oz in the 6'6" version. The semi rectangular bags add a few ounces though, but more inside volume

I know it's a weird question but do you generally sleep with your legs together on your side? If so, have you tried to sleep bending both legs and your sleeping bag rather than trying to bend each leg separately inside your bag? Not sure if you understand but that has worked really well for me.

I use a 0 degree bag all year round in Colo, Wyo, and Alaska. I sometimes unzip my bag when I first head to bed with my legs outside the bag but still covered...lots of room when unzipped. If you layer up it's pretty easy to do this and still stay warm.

67/58/41 inside dimensions on my Kodiak. The Sequoia is 66/61/48 and the Ponderosa is 67/64/48. Ponderosa is also 2lb 11oz in 6'6" length, Sequoia is 3lb 7oz

I’m a side sleeper as well with rather wide shoulders. I run a semi-rectangular LLbean down bag which gives me the room to move. A full mummy is just to cramped for me.

I switched to a quilt a few years ago and will never look back. Most of them are customizable. I have a long 6’6” x wide 20° down quilt, with a good pad I have never been cold nor slept better in the back country. Ridiculously compact and under 2 lbs. can’t really go wrong

For the record I should add I’m 6’ and 225 lbs. really broad shoulders and barrel chest.

Take a look at Outdoor Vitals. I am a side sleeper and have lots of room. I got the -15 degree bag in the long it has a 68” girth at the shoulders. I am 5’ 10” 185 lbs laying on my back hands on my chest finger tips touching, my elbows still have room. And it is only $309.00
