Was told about this site from another member, long time hunter/fisher/trapper/etc. pretty much all my hobbies revolve about those first two from knifemaking, and mostly gunsmithing in my spare time. Hunted out west since '91, a bowhunt in the Book Cliffs when still in high school, and CO elk and mule deer after that. I've been pretty successful at it for a non-resident hunting public DIY having killed a bull with every rifle tag I've bought (7 so far) and a few dry years with archery and a one successful one with an adult cow. Could give a hoot about the crowded hunting in WI anymore, I just look forward to going out west most years. This year is a 'by' as I have a baby due in November but I'm still building a couple more toys and I'll have them all tuned up for next year...might try to hunt two states on one trip if I can set it up.

Me too, so I packed up my crap 3 years ago and moved west. Welcome to Rokslide. What part of the state do you live in?

I live in SW/SC WI, west of the Dells about 40 mi. Grew up in northern WI hunting the Nicolet Nat'l Forest, endless hard maple ridges and cedar swamps. Learned to hunt by stillhunting so still enjoy that type of hunting, although I typically stay out of the black timber out west as I don't like to push the elk out of the area for the season.

Never hunted up in the Nicolet or Chequamegon. I did get to spend a little time up around Minocqua. Nice area to hunt over by Wonewoc and Ironton though. I hunted mostly in Sauk county and the counties around there. Parents still have a little land between Reedsburg and Baraboo. I do miss the woods in late Oct and Nov.

Live just NW of there around the Kendall area. Living in northern WI and also around Fond du Lac growing up I've come to like this country in SW WI the best. Lots of hills and timber with plenty of farmland. Wonewoc is just down the road none too far from me.

The one time I was through Utah was headed to the book cliffs for bow mule deer. NE Utah struck me as very nice. Saw a lot of game on the drive through. Hunted a week in the Book Cliffs and then went south and east to head home. Got a good look at a California Condor on our way our on the edge of the cliffs. That was in 89-90 I believe. Huge birds!

Welcome! I grew up around the Fond du Lac area but will likely never move back to WI. Good luck this season!

Welcome! I grew up in the Madison area and we always hunted west of Spring Green. I still go back nearly every year for rifle or archery season and to see family. Treestand hunting got a lot more difficult after living out west for a couple of years.... and the hike up the ridge now seems like nothing.

I was active duty army for 3 years and stationed at Ft Carson after AIT. I was in the mountains most every weekend either hunting or flyfishing...had a great time and really thought I might stay out there after I got out. Weather was great, hunting and fishing was good, but even in the early 90's the eastern slope population was booming and I didn't care for much of it. Still go back most years for elk/deer but this years out as I've a baby due in Nov and I don't want to be away from momma during that time although she's encouraging me to go. Last year was a great hunt and that will tide me over until next year. Attached is a pic of a few friends on our hunt, 4 bulls and a decent buck. First year we'd filled all the tags and it was a hell of a lot of work packing them out!
