Just curious your experience. What vehicle, use, ect. Major repairs?

I really feel like 200k in today's gas engines are not as bad as the older tech and engine, and 300k+ is realistic if maint.

Close…05 F250 super crew 4x4 with the dreaded 5.4L…278,000ish. I do 98% of my own maintenance. Fought the first set of spark plugs a little bit and the subsequent 2 sets have not been an issue. Had a cam phaser fail around 215K. Consumed a long weekend and I replaced the phasers, VCTs, chains & guides, chain tensioners, oil pump, water pump, cam followers, etc. Had an internal seal on the tranny fail around the 175k mark; ~$700 fix. It uses about 1qt of oil every 5k miles between changes and requires regular maintenance items. The 5.4 doesn’t do anything fast but it gets the job done empty or pulling 24’ plus stock trailers.

I have an 05 tundra with 265k as well. Timing belt, and water pump. High pressure solenoid in the tranny. Bypassed the SAIS system. Regular maintenance.

I’m sure both will hit 300 without much fuss.

Also have had 2 GMC 6.2 liters great power. Both had flattened lobes around 200K.

I have an 09 with the last year of the 5.4. Mileage is at 145,000 on the original plugs but I think it’s about time to tackle them….

I did start running 10w30 in it at about 80,000 due to horrendous cam chain/phaser noise at low rpm. The recommended 5w20 didn’t generate enough pressure to operate the hydraulic components at low speed I guess.

Not using fancy oil, just Castrol gtx. And I pull our 20’ rv all over with little sympathy.

Anyway, got any tips for the spark plugs?

Your assumption is correct. As a kid I remember every 1970’s & 80’s vehicle we owned requiring some major surgery before they hit 125,000. And my dad was meticulous with maintenance.

Not there yet. But it wont be long.

Round trip for this years hunt. I cant/wont complain, especially for a 2500 truck that weighs 9,000 pounds and has a ton of power.

Warm to hot engine, and used my 3/8” Milwaukee impact. Blow and or vacuum all the debris off the top of the engine first. Try to not side load the plug and say a short prayer. If you break a plug the Lisle Tools broken plug removal tool is superior to the Ford type tool. Blow or vacuum any carbon / debris out of the cylinder before installing new plugs.

Put updated plugs in and use nickel hi-temp anti-sieze.

This guy is a wealth of info on fords if you like doing your own work.

2003 Chevy Tahoe with 320,000 miles on it. Factory engine and transmission still going strong. So far this year it has made a trip from Arkansas to Yellowstone and back and then out to Colorado hunting. Normal wear items to include wheel bearings, an alternator, along with knock sensors. Pretty much it. Oh and a new AC a couple years ago.

2000 F250 V10 with 382,000 miles and still going strong. 2013 f350 6.2l V8 with 215,000 miles and still my daily driver. Minimal issues with either truck.
Okay so is this interesting. I've had 3 v10 trucks and all 200-280k when sold, and my dad has his still with 230k. None had any issues except the plugs, which isn't that drastic. All ran very strong when sold.

I've been truck shopping like crazy lately for a cash in hand truck to get me by for about 2 years, as I don't want to finance anything at all rn.

I keep seeing V10 trucks (what I am after) with 250-310k in a respectable price range IMO, and I can't find any reason to talk myself out of them...

There's a CBSB with 300k I have my eye on right now and it's the reason I started this thread lol.

They put those engines in a lot of vehicles. So in my opinion the worst case scenario is you have to buy a used engine with 200k on it and spend a couple thousand drooping it in and off you go again. Which is my plan for my Tahoe. When the 5.3 dies, a 6.0 will drop right in.

Sold my 06 duramax last year, 290k and still running strong. I just hated the thought of being back in the sticks and having some little problem strand me.

it was a fine truck that did it’s job. I used it hard as an oilfield electrician And on yearly hunts.

I went the 1/2 T route For replacement, first Toyota ever. Really a nice truck with a small bed/big rear seat area.

My V10 still has the original water pump. Go figure.

I have 375k on a 2006 Tacoma with the TRD Off-Road package.

I've replaced all wheel bearings once, the drive shaft/u-joints a couple times (stopped having to do this when I stopped fording creeks), front axles/cv boots once or twice a side, alternator, and starter. These are 'wear parts' to me, and I'm not disappointed to have had them done.

I believe a vehicle's best years (value) are after 200k; we bought a 2008 Sequoia for my wife at 180k and I'm confident it can go to 280k, probably much further.

1996 4cyl, 5spd single cab tacoma, 4x4. 317K miles. I have replaced the leaf springs, shocks, tires, U joint and the alternator, had some work done to fix the heater. Origninal engine and transmission. She is a great rig for the forest service roads here in Colorado.

1998 VW 1.9L TDI manual, 325k miles. Lots of maintenance on things like the radiator, turbo, etc, but the engine is original. The monthly cost of maintaining it just keeps making so much sense that I can't justify buying something new. A truck would be nice...
