Who Scouts with a Dog?

I wanna bring my dog, but she is a chaser. If she see the deer, she will go after them...

I take my dog on almost every trip. Trained him to walk behind me when when needed. We’ve been 10 yards from bugling elk and he saved my butt from a grizz while packing elk out in the dark. Way better than humans, they don’t give always hunting spots.

in Colorado I don’t believe you can big game hunt with a dog or blood trail unless registered and leashed.

My GSP goes scouting…I don’t see much when she’s with me. She does a good job of making sure the 200-300 yards around me is void of anything.

Same as all of these guys. They scout, hike, fly fish and hunt with me all of the time. I can’t imagine not having them with me. This was our last mountain lake fly fishing hike before the Montana snow buried it. 17 miles for greyling. So much fun and they love it. Don’t even worry about scent and them ruining anything. Teach them not to chase big game and have a great time!!!!

But how would you train a dog not to chase big game? I've never cared but do care now!

You know mine pay more attention to squirrels and grouse then they do big game. They don’t chase elk or deer so maybe im lucky. I trained them to let me fish holes before they go in the water. They just sit and wait until I say go ahead. It’s pretty cool

my dog rarely leaves my sid. He is always with me when I am outdoors. We are allowed to have a dog with us during big game season so he is often even with me when i am deer hunting.

I've started taking my dog with a lot more hunting, half because I like having her around, the other half for the above. She is going to notice a bear long before I do. That and I flat out like her more than almost all people....

I also need to buy one of those doggy orange vests, I've been cheap and just wrapped a normal human one around her

Took my wife's corgi (I refuse to claim him) shed hunting twice. The first time I lost him for an hour and finally found him 2 canyons over flushing chukar out of the cliffs. Next time, I was glassing a canyon and noticed a herd of deer had spooked... with a corgi behind them herding them like cattle. He stays home now.

I always took my German Shepherd along before I had to put her down last January due to a tumor. She was a great outdoor companion. I wish I could have another one but my current living situation won’t allow for it.

Want to see examples of what a GSD can be trained to do in tactical situations? Look up Vietnam scout dog videos on YouTube. I can’t speak for all breeds, but it’s amazing what GSDs accomplished hunting men. They’re fine companions hunting elk sign.

Brought my lab elk scouting a few years back. We packed in and spent a couple of nights. He scared the shit out of me one night, waking me up growling and snarling. When I shut him up, I heard a sizeable herd of elk walking and talking all around my tarp. Too dark to see them and I enjoyed listening so I didn't spook them off with a light.
My dog is a bird dog, trained to cast around in front of me, so I put him on a 30' lead just to keep a better eye on him. We did cross one other person and their dog was on leash. She definitely seemed like the type to give me grief if the dog was off leash. She didn't appreciate how long my leash was. Oh well, can't please everyone all the time.

i used to let my pointing lab hunt with me. This year in alaska my friend let me have this jack russel along (she is not drunk. thought it was funny how she was sleeping on my cot, so we put the whiskey next to her) She thought she was as big as a wolf. Nice knowing she would be alert to bigger things.

You have to follow a training plan. Just zapping a dog probably doesn't work. My wife was in charge of it and honestly, all he needs is tone and vibrate to be reminded if he forgets himself.

We have a wire around the yard that he is trained to as well. These tools allow him to live a pretty privileged life. Goes everywhere with us and gets to roam free at home.

you are right. they need to understand the why they are being shocked. dogs learn quick if they are taught well

K9 presence won’t hurt your odds a bit when scouting, or hunting if they can keep still and quiet.
