I’m Planning on going in to some areas in August where the availability of water is questionable. Im used to having plenty of places to filter and fill up and never really measured how much water i was using per day. How much water on average would you plan on packing in per day if you were unsure if water was going to be available? When having to take in multiple days worth of water, how are you packing it in? I’m not able to stage it in advance as im coming in from the east.

I find I need to have three liters available per day. It is obviously highly dependent on your level of exertion. Most I have ever tried to carry in at once with gear was 11 liters. One 2L Evernew, one 2L platypus, a 6L MSR dram and my one liter Nalgene. The area was pretty dry but I did end up finding a spring which was great…would have been better to have known that at the trailhead 😂. Live and learn

Plan on a gallon a day per person. Less than that can get worrisome until you know how much you need on hot dry days while hiking. I use cheap gallon bottles. They hold up fine for me.

How far in are you going? How much moving will you be doing? If there are animals there is almost always water. However, sometimes you just got to pack it. The msr dram is the way to go as far as packing if water is limited. A gallon a day is conservative but 3l a day is minimum in my opinion.

Gallon a day per person is a good starting point for drinking... If you need water for making meals, any kind of clean-up, washing, etc. you may need more like 1 1/2 gallons per person per day. If the area is as dry as it seems... you'll need to drink more to stay on your game.

There are some clever alternatives to packing in dozens of pounds of water... like a solar still.

This kind of thing:

But the dug solar still described in the link above depends on having something that has moisture (e.g. vegetation) you can put in the pit.

More info about the area, your planned activities, etc. would help us help you!
