This is a 10 year old apple tree in Alabama. There is an ongoing discussion on rub or claws did this…happened a couple of days ago. anyone with ideas or explanation ??

I'd say a yearling spike.. I think a buck with multiple points would have left more cross-pattern marks.. I agree it's awefully low for a bear..

I can't imagine a spike whitetail making those marks. They just look to aggressive, deep etc.
Do deer not drop antlers in Alabama?

You have cats? No, not house cats, big cats.

Interesting comments. As mentioned above it seemed low for both a mature WT buck and an adult bear. I had thought about a cat, but honestly I don’t remember seeing trees marked up by a big kitty.

This was in a friends yard and he said there was a buck through the yard a day before. Does make for interesting conversation.

Based on the V at the bottom as they presumably returned to an upwards motion, I'm going to go with a buck rubbing up and down.

I feel like you should assume it’s a buck and take it as an opportunity to name him… I would go with some variant of “brows” I would act fast, so down the road you can talk about the history you had with this buck… content
