I'm heading out for a week 11/29 right outside of Big Bend State Park. After watching a 5x5 walk at 700 yds last year I'm hoping to connect. I also think i covered too much ground last year while I should have stayed put and glassed from the high point I picked out. Anyone else Mule Deer hunting Texas this season?

I've been mule deer hunting in TX and a few other states every year since 1971. I'm addicted to them. Last 10 years or so been concentrating on sandhills of West Texas.

I used to hunt 10K acres that joins the Meredith public land. My son and I killed a couple nice bucks there. Great country to hunt. I don't have a mule deer hunt lined up this year, unless I draw one. Fingers crossed....

Hoping to get drawn by TPWD but so far I never have. 6th time's a charm, right? LOL

Otherwise, I can't afford it. I have family near Meredith (the only non-draw mule deer public area I know of) and thought of making a trip up there, but I suspect it's a crap show on the NPS land, so I haven't bothered to make the 9-hour drive.

I have told my wife Im amazed at all the people who drive up from Amarillo to hunt Meredith. It never crossed my mind that its not just locals hunting it. I live 15 min from it so I'll be there.

Well, when you're a state the size of Texas and you only have one non-draw public land muley option, I guess that's what you get. It's pretty embarrassing that a state so big would have so few public places to hunt mule deer.

Im going to be more aggressive scouting it next year. I know a guy or two that kill deer every year out there but they arent giving up the honey hole yet.

It will help to be willing and able to pack in a long way off the parking areas, as is always the case on any public land hunt.

Yeah, I wish. If TX only had a reasonable about of Muley options.
I never even knew about the "Meredith" till now.
Been applying for 7 yrs I think for the draws. No luck.

Until you actually read a history book about how the state was founded and populated........weird.

? I grew up in TX. I'm pretty familiar with the origin story. Even if you didn't grow up here, you can't live here for more than 3 months without having it shoved down your throat by our well-meaning, passionate citizens. LOL

I do wonder however how long it will take for the average Texan to accept the fact that the war of independence against Mexico was fought over slavery. Nobody 'round here wants to talk about that for some reason. ha, ha.

Back on topic for y’all bitching about public land. When you consider the cost of driving out of state and paying out of state license/gas/etc there are a bunch of options on the border that are comparable in price and you can hunt 5-10k acres for a week with zero competition. (Except maybe snakes, cats, cartel, wild horses, heat exhaustion). There isn’t much comparable in world where you can hunt such a big track by yourself.
