Anyone have this? I’m not talking about the Down WS jacket. I’m talking about the fully synthetic hoody. How well can it pack and how warm is it?

I tested one this last winter and it worked good and held up even better. IT has Mapped 133-gram PrimaLoft® Gold Eco Insulation in Body // Extremities: Mapped 100-gram PrimaLoft® Gold Eco Insulation in Hood, Side Panels, Under Arms and Lower Sleeve Panel. Compared to the old one it is much wormer. I would run this to temps above 0. If the wind picks up then it starts braking throw the jacket at about 15 miles an hour so if you have a Jetstream or other jacket with Gore windstopper then I would run that on the outside and run the Kevin Hoody as the Insulation peace. I don't think it gets very small but here is a photo of one packed in its own hood 113287

For just a few ounces more than the lite, it looks like it should be a lot warmer. Definitely not a hike around in jacket, that's what the active jacket excels at, but for sitting and glassing it should be pretty legit.

Significantly warmer than the lite, quick note on size, as implied by Sitka it’s made to throw on as an outer most layer when glassing, if you’re thinking about wearing under a shell or you’re not a fan of bulk, size down, I normally I wear an xl in Sitka and ordered that, didn’t have much if any hesitation returning it for a large.

Big fan of 1Shots customer service!

I know you guys use the SG Grumman Down jacket as well. How does the warmth compare?

I bought the Kelvin hoody for early archery. I sold it. I found it to be fairly warm but it seemed to be very cheap. Nothing about it was soft. It felt like I was wearing a dry cell bag. It was really bulky and extremely noisy. It ran short but the arms were very baggy. The hood was awful and I couldn’t hear myself think while wearing it. Think wearing a plastic bag over your head. It was that loud. It was all ripstop exterior and interior. It just felt very cheap. Like something you would buy at Walmart. Nothing about it made me think this was a high class piece of gear. The cuffs were even sloppy and they used the cheapest form of elastic you can imagine. It wasn’t as heavy as you would expect. Overall, it was a pile of crap. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone for any reason other than it was warm. I suspect Sitka realized as much as it didn’t even make it a full year.

For what it’s worth, I tried on my buddies lost park parka and thought it was much nicer. They make a full zip jacket now and if I didn’t get a Rab puffy, I would get one of those hands down.

I didn't find any of those issues with the ones I've worn. I think you got a really bad example and I would have sent it back to Sitka. Won't be long before we find out what they replace it with anyways.

I think if you want a really nice jacket you should just get on Nunatak Gear's wait list and get one made exactly to your specifications. Kifaru makes a good jacket, but your options are extremely limited. Nunatak you can pick your level of Apex synthetic, or down, sleeve length, collar height, hood or no hood, extra length in back, pocket layout, half zip or full zip etc etc.

So Sitka discontinued the kelvin hoody “KH” (133g insulation) but kept the kelvin lite hoody “KLH” (80g insulation) and kept the kelvin ws down hoody “KDH” (250g) because the KH was made from such a different material from the other two? I’m confused.

No they discontinued it because it sucked and it probably had horrible sales. Both the others you stated are great jackets and time tested. To me it seemed like they threw the Kelvin hoody into the line up at the last minute but it was poorly executed. The KH was very loud, fit like a box, had a really bad hood and felt cheaply made.

Ok good to know. I already have a first lite cirrus jacket which is similar to the KLH. I might get the KH if I can get one on camofire cheap. I’ll be using it as insulation when glassing and it would come off as soon as I start moving.
