I’m looking for a Rangefinder from vortex. I would primarily be using for whitetail hunting out of a tree but I do plan on doing some western hunting and don’t wanna have to buy a new set for that. Is an 850 enough for most western hunting or do I need a 1300. Also is the red reticle a must? I looked at one in the store and thought it made a big difference but wanted to hear from people with experience. Also how do I tell when looking online if it has the red reticle. I’ve been having problems trying to figure that out online.

To me an illuminated reticle is a must. At dawn and dusk in the trees it’s necessary IMO.

Looks like the Copperhead and Ranger are the lowest priced illuminated models.

I cannot answer your question regarding western hunting requirements.

FWIW, I use an older Leupold 1200 TBR and absolutely love it. Bought it new probably 5 years ago and have never had an issue.

Red reticle is very helpful in low light situations and the 850 should be enough for most hunts IMO. The problem I had with older Vortex rangefinders is the speed to get a reading, maybe they've fixed that now.

After switching to a red OLED reticle this year, I'll never go back! I have the Sig Kilo1600 and am extremely pleased with it. Cabela's has the Sig Kilio2000 on sale right now for $220. Great deal.

I have the Vortex Impact 800 and it’s pretty nice, but I have to agree with the guys above. In low light conditions, it would be nice to have the illuminated reticle. As far as whitetail hunting goes, it’s more than sufficient for me.
