Which puffy to get?

The Kuiu light version is pretty light and compacts pretty small. I have worn it just standing around and its great, however it does get pretty warm as soon as you start moving around but like others mentioned about down apparel its not much for brush busting and would probably rip pretty easily. No experience with the others.

Just because I feel like not enough people know this, for a GENERAL idea of warmth when comparing jackets, you can multiply the fill power by the fill weight and compare results.

Grumman- 850 fill power * 5.3oz fill weight = 4505
Kuiu Super Down Pro- 850 fill power * 5oz fill weight = 4250
Black Ovis Anchor Point- 800 fill power * 4.2 oz fill weight = 3360

Theoretically the Grumman would be warmer based on fill alone. Baffle construction also plays a big part in warmth...whether the jacket keeps the fill evenly spread/lofted and where it is needed. For most hunting applications, the total weight of the jacket and packability is also a concern, among other things. Maybe a heavier jacket with a more durable material makes sense in certain terrain or conditions, where others might prioritize total weight over durability.

Down/puffy jackets can be quite the rabbit hole if you really want to do a deep dive. That said, the Grumman is very respectable in all aspects when compared to most of the high end puffies on the market, hunting branded or not.

The grumman is a BEAST. So much so I will be buying the pants. The fact that they pack down so small is a huge benefit.

A 7-8 yr old synthetic puffy has almost certainly lost loft.

I recently upgraded from the Kryptek Ghar to the SG Grumman. The Grumman is definitely warmer and I would bet the Ghar is more durable.

Does anyone sleep in the grumman and find the drawstring in the back of the hood annoying?

I'm currently debating kuiu super down pro vs grumman.

This is very surprising to me heard great things about it's warmth.
It's very warm, but also heavy and bulky. Not an issue in the front country, and I would definitely recommend it for that use case. But in a pack it takes up a ton of space.

Black Ovis has Western Mountaineering jackets and pants on sale today. I snagged their hooded puffy. If it's anything like their sleeping bag it should be awesome.

Anyone have any experience with the non-hunting brand "Rab"?

I have access to their veteran discount and they have a lot of options quiet a bit cheaper than the hunting brands..

Here's an export from a Google Sheet I have been building lol..

Warmth to weight and cost factored, its really hard to beat the SG Grumman, especially with it not on sale.

However, if you can spend a little bit more money and want a little bit warmer jacket, it sounds like the new OV down puffy will probably punch above its weight class cost wise and will be 16oz (about 4oz heavier than the SG).

These are the 2 I’m considering as well. Did they release an estimate price on the OV puffy?

@Brigham @ Outdoor Vitals did give a range in the Hunt Backcountry podcast episode in which they discussed all the pieces but I can't recall exactly what it was for the puffy. I want to say it was like $250-279 ish?

But keep in mind that piece will have like 1.5x the down fill of the Grumman and only weigh about that much more in total weight. It should be stupid warm, I'm definitely planning on snagging one; whether or not I decide to dump the Grumman all together is still TBD.

Ya I might just pick up the gurnman before I lose out on the deal and This, then decide which to keep. I currently have a MH ghost whisperer 2 and it doesn’t really do much in temps below 40 with a little wind if doing any sort of extended glassing.

Looking at getting my first real puffy jacket. Ive always had some cheaper off brand models that work ok for what they are. Not really going to be packing in anwhere, just day hunts from the road. Mostly be used for rifle hunting in South Dakota when i stop and glass. November can be pretty brutal here on the open plains. Any recommendations? Thanks everyone!
My favorite down puffy is definitely the Stone Glacier Grumman. I have been running it for 3 years and haven’t had the want to change which is saying something for me!

That FL chamberlain is a great jacket super warm. I find it can be overly warm and doesn’t pack down very small like some of these other options. But for driving around in a sxs in the late season that’s what I reach for.

Just curious, does anybody run a lighter weight puffy jacket as well as a down vest together for colder temps? Then use the flexibility of only needing the vest or lighter weight jacket for more milder conditions?

+1 on wondering this as well!
Sleeves are tight if I do too much layering with my FL UNC 2.0, but a vest would be easy.
Also, 👋 from Southern Oregon!

I have the Kuiu Flyway (don’t know if it’s considered a puffy) and it’s stupid warm for how light it is.
