I’ve got a 6.5 prc that I feel comfortable shooting inside of 600 yards. It’s currently doped with 120 grain Barnes ttsx bullets. Have taken two bucks with it just shy of 400 yards with this round. Dropped dead one shot.

I drew Montana deer/ elk combo and have been considering changing the round to shoot 156 grain Berger EOLs. This change would be for the event I have a chance at an elk. Not sure if I should even muck with it since the copper bullets seem have good force and momentum. I’ve heard good things on the bergers as well.

I don’t hand load but have been shooting Choice ammunition rounds exclusively and have both of the rounds above from them on-hand.

Thoughts?

For 6.5PRC, 140-156 bullets will work fine for either. Generally speaking there’s a lot of match bullets or delayed expansion bullets that are preferred vs bonded, but both will put animals down.

Hornady ELD-M or ELD-X, Berger Hybrid Target, Extreme Hunter, or EOL, are probably the majority of what people shoot. I think there is a couple guys shooting Barnes 127gr LRX and a few flavors of Nosler AB and ABLR with consistent results.

I use 140gr Berger HTs, 143gr ELD-X, and 147gr ELD-Ms with no lost animals. Find one that shoots well and get enough to practice as often as possible.

I'd go with a 140hyb or 140 eldm. Shouldn't have a problem running them 3000-3050fps pending ur barrel length. My lady has been using a 24" prc with 140hyb hand loads in that velocity range, and that bullet has been very lethal on mule deer, jello vitals with exits on shots further than 400y. Inside 400y the bullet exits less often. Prior to the prc, she shot 65cm with 140 eldm at 2830fps. Bullet killed everything it hit as well.

Awesome thanks everyone. For what it’s worth my prc is 24” carbon barrel Bergara. The handloads from choice/ Barnes ttsx seem to do really well. Average 3122 with the 120 ttsx. This weekend I’ll mess around with the Berger 156 and see how we group and chrono.
