Which Option for New Rifle?

I’ve put some rounds through my brothers 6.5prc HMR 24” with a vortex strike eagle on it and 147eldms. Shoots well, no ejection issues over 60rounds anyways. Personally I’m not a fan of the 90deg bolts though and I don’t think it is as smooth as my tikka if your really paying attention. It is a heavy rig however and aics short action mags are limited if you want to load long and heavy.

I’ve also had some time around a tikka 6.5ctr 24” in a mdt xrs chassis with an apex hunter scope and 147eldms. Shoots well, no ejection issues, runs aics mags so same issues as the hmr for heavies. I’d say I prefer the hmr stock over the mdt.

I’ll echo what’s been said a bunch. Given what was mentioned for shooting ranges, I would definitely consider a smaller caliber. 6.5cm is a great option, noticeably less recoil and will send 147’s way farther than you plan on shooting.

The Roughtech stock is exactly the same as the standard stock, with a cheap textured finish on it. It’s not “sweet”. It’s just a pig with lipstick.

Buy the standard stainless T3X Lite in 308.
Definitely not "sweet" lol. Not at all, unless the basic t3x stocks are sweet.

I have a 2025 308 compact that I’ll be taking elk hunting . With a 20” barrel and can, I’m getting 2550 with a 175 terminal ascent, and 2740 with the new 168 eldm Superformance ammo. The terminal ascent is 2000 fps and 1500 ft lbs out to 550 yards and the eldm is carry the same numbers to 700. These numbers are at 8000’ elevation. Using the Terminal Ascent, I can make impacts out to 600 with my 1-10 on a 10” target.

I don’t subscribe to the ft lb metric but anyone that says 308 is not enough, is blowing smoke. 2000 fps is more than sufficient for either bullet to do its intended job. You’ll be just fine with a 308 and can shoot for much cheaper than most other cartridges.

How windy dose it get in there?
and 308 with a 160 will get blown around a lot and drop in like a an artillery shell

the 6.5prc 147 combo and the standard tikka superlite + carbon stock of your choice
just sold one that was 20" with a suppressor it was mint
sold it to one of my mates as im building a 6prc

edit to add its the wind thats hard to read
dont stress about drop numbers its the wind bucking that counts for a lot more.

Ok, so I am getting ready to get a new rifle. It will be my first new hunting rifle and due to budget/time constraints, it’s going to be a hunting and fun shooting rifle. I have decided I want to go with 308 Win seeing as most of my hunting is going to be Ga deer and hogs, but the boss is warming up to the idea of going out west for antelope and mule deer to start with. I don’t have any aspirations to shoot 1000 yards with any regularity, plan on keeping myself 500 and in. I like a longer barrel in general. But here are the options I have narrowed myself down to:

1) Tikka UPR in 308 with a 24” barrel, 0 or 20 MOA rail, stainless or black, no experience with Tikka.

2) Tikka T3X in 308 if I am not mistaken the longest barrel I will be able to get is 22”. Put in stock or UD chassis.

3) Ruger American Gen 3 Predator in 308 with 22” barrel and put in an upgraded stock or likely and UD chassis.

Of these 3 options, would you go with a ready to go rifle in the UPR, or more of a semi-custom route with T3X lite/superlite or Ruger American Gen 2?
If that was my choices I’d be looking at the T3X but I would definitely want to look into something more like the 7prc it will perform a lot better than a 308. But that’s just my opinion.
