Which magnum rifle

As a father, I'd be tickled pink that he enjoys hunting enough to be wanting a new caliber. My son shoots a 300 Win Mag. It's a Savage High Country with some weight to it. Suppressed, it's a soft shooter and he shoots dimes with it. Word of advise: If he ends up with one and it's not suppressed, make sure he wears ear protection even in the field. A 300 win mag with a brake, is a brutal SOB on your ears.

Peerce, Stinger

I also started using a shoulder recoil shield in high school and it makes shooting it more enjoyable. It’s a stiff memory foam and spreads out pressure quite well. They are 1/2” thick and I eventually cut down all my stocks 1/2”, and still do to this day, so using it felt quite natural.
Thanks for the tip. I will look into getting him one

Which suppressor are you using? I think I want to eventually go that route

He’s killed quite a few deer and hogs with his 7-08 but like most young men and alotta older ones, he’s got the itch for a new rifle. I really like the Seekins and will be ordering one for myself next week. He’s set on a HMR and I think the extra weight may be a good thing
Bergara quality control has been considered to be hit and miss, from my understanding; however, I do not own one, so I can't say for sure.

I’ve read that and it has me a little nervous but he’s pretty set on the HMR. Only have one buddy with a HMR and his shoots great

He is running a Banish Buck 30. I have the Banish 30 Gold and his set up is no louder suppressed than mine and the Buck 30 was a bit cheaper. If you shoot a Magnum rifle suppressed, you'll never go back.

This is not me kidding but being serious.

Lot of data coming out about concussive blasts with firearms causing cte. I would be very careful with having a kid whose brain is still forming shooting a big boomer. Especially with a muzzle brake.

I would suppress it at the very least, and consider a smaller caliber until he is an adult.

My informed opinion.

Totally agree with the recommendation to focus on proficiency. He'll get more out of training, ammo, or a hunting adventure than a new rifle that basically does all the same stuff as his current rifles.

Suppressors are sweet. Look at the 3d printed options, I like cgs.

That’s interesting and something I’ve never thought about. I’m gonna have to research that some. I do think we will go with a suppressor if we end up with a magnum round

Yes, if the cost is reasonable and it is legal in your state, why not get a suppressor or suppressor with brake?

I can appreciate that considering one of my previous careers including being a swat operator and sniper. I definitely believe drowning in brass is a good thing. He’s got a good shooting foundation and is a pretty descent marksman. Killed his first deer 93 yds at 5 years old and has since shot them out to almost 300 yds. I think the suppressor route may be the best of both worlds. Allows him to step up to a magnum while still being easy and fun to shoot

My 15 YO son is wanting a bigger rifle. He has a 7-08 and shoots my 257 wthby. Hes decided on a Bergara HMR and wants a 300 win mag. I think the recoil might be too much and won’t be enjoyable for him to shoot. Would a 7prc be a better option? Is the recoil significantly less?
Just out of curiosity - what are you hunting that a 257 weatherby isn't enough gun for?

Absolutely nothing. I love the 257 but it’s my gun and he wants his own. Just your average 15 year old wanting bigger and better than dad
